Thank you for
your interest in Landscape Irrigation Science(LIS). Many people
have not heard of a Landscape Irrigation Science major , or do not
realize that there are professional positions in the field of landscape
irrigation which require a university education. This in not surprising,
given that professional careers in this field are relatively new
and Cal Poly Pomona has the first four year degree program in Landscape
Irrigation Science.
Cal Poly Pomona
is a natural choice for the LIS degree, as the landscape irrigation
industry has its roots in Southern California. Well known irrigation
and equipment manufacturers such Rain Bird and TORO and many others
have facilities in this area. Also, water is a natural resource
that is in short supply in many Western states, leading to high
cost to maintain landscapes, parks and golf courses and a need to
for water conservation.
Computer technology,
mandated water conservation, irrigation system design, knowledge
of soil-water-plant relationships, water quality, and water resource
policy are all important issues to irrigation in urban areas. The
LIS degree addresses these issues through its curriculum and related
activities.
Technology and
public policy change continuously and organizations such as the
American Society of Irrigation Consultants and the Irrigation Association
provide opportunities for professional growth. Please browse through
this WEB Site and contact the department if you need additional
information regarding the major or Center for Turf, Irragation,
and Landscape Technology.
