Following sequence of courses in basic irrigation are offered at Cal Poly, Pomona:
This sequence assumes that the participants have some knowledge about irrigation and are comfortable with basic algebra. Most courses will proceed at fast pace.

Dates for September 2004 Courses: Classes meet 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, Bldg 45 room 101, Cal Poly Pomona Campus. Cost is $125 per person per course.

September 14, 2004 Recycled Water for Turf, Landscape and Golf (with emphasis on irrigation water quality).

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS


1. Irrigation System Hydraulics:

Facts about water; water pressure creation and measurement; calculation and examples of static and dynamic pressures; friction losses in pipes, pipe fitting and other irrigation components; flow and pressures in a typical sprinkler irrigation system; method of pipe sizing for irrigation. Many examples and calculations on all topics. Participants will also work on example problems in class.

2. Sprinkler Irrigation Design, Sprinkler Spacing and Nozzle Selection:

Layout of sprinkler heads for a given area, calculation about water availability for landscape applications, division of total area in to various zones, pipe, valve and backflow preventer sizing, selection of proper controller. A complete design example of a residential sprinkler irrigation system.

3. Recycled Water for Turf, Landscape and Golf (with emphasis on irrigation water quality):

Basic introduction to irrigation water quality. Understanding sodium hazard. Sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), total dissolved solids (TDS), electric conductivity (EC) and other related terms. Calculation of gypsum requirements for irrigation water.

4. Irrigation scheduling and Evaluation:

Soil types and their water storage capacities. Soil texture and structure. Explanations of terms like intake or infiltration rate, saturation, field capacity, permanent wilting point and dry soil. Moisture content and bulk density calculations. Water use by plants, factors affecting plant water requirements. Various methods of determining evapo-transpiration (ET) including CIMIS.

Determination of irrigation interval ( number of days between irrigation) and irrigation run time. Percent depletion and its use in irrigation scheduling. Effect of system efficiency on run time. Seasonal variations. Ways to adjust irrigation schedules at various times of the years. Plant factors and their use in irrigation schedules.

5. Electric Valve Trouble Shooting:

How electric irrigation valves works and various ways to check its performance. Trouble shooting methods to isolate the problem when a electric valve is not working properly. Use of multimeter for testing of valve solenoids, wires, electric shorts and open circuits in the system.
