5. Library Catalog: How to Find Journals

Another use of the Library Catalog is to find out if the Library has a subscription to a particular journal.

Maybe you already have a bibliographic citation for an article, or maybe you just want to browse through issues of a particular journal, magazine, or newspaper.

This is an example of a bibliographic citation. It's citing an article in the journal, IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion.

article citation

To find this article you first have to find out if the Library has a subscription to the journal. The easiest way to find out is to use the Library Catalog.

Library catalog search screen - journal title searchSelect the TITLE tab and search on the title of the journal or magazine (not the title of the article!). Change the selection in the drop-down menu to Search Periodicals/Newspapers. This step is not absolutely necessary, but can be helpful, especially if you're looking for a single word title like Science or Nature. Click Submit.

The Catalog record for the journal tells you what issues are available and where they're located. The article we need is in the September 2007 issue which is available online. Just click the link to go to the journal on the publisher's website. If you are working from off campus you will need to provide your Bronco number and Library Password before connecting to the journal.

Details about print or micro holdings are also included in the Catalog record.
