Summary of County Agricultural Commissioners Reports
County production data.

Contact Information for California County Agricultural Commissioners and Sealers. Includes links to websites. Most of the Ag Commissioners websites have past and current crop reports (crop reports often include livestock).

California Statistical Abstract from Counting California, has Agricultural and Demographic data by County. Also on Counting California, the Browse Topics by Geography page allows you to limit data tables by county.

California Agricultural Statistics Service, which has links to the 2002 Census of Agriculture California County Level Data

National Agricultural Statistics Service, which has a link to the Agricultural Quick Stats, which has searchable county data.

Has very brief facts about each county.

Western Regional Climate Center
Both current and historical data; includes a climate summary for California; Numerical weather data for many California Cities can be had from Weatherbase.

Natural Hazards Mitigation Plans
for cities and counties often have climate summaries in narrative form, particularly in the section on wildfires;  do a Google.com search of: Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan [name of city or county]:

California Climate Data Archive

Pacific Southwest Major Land Resource Area Soil Survey Office, Region#2 has the online Web Soil Survey, where you can retrieve very detailed soil data. The Pacific Southwest Major Land Resource Area Soil Survey Office, Region#2 page also has some links to online soil surveys which might have a county summary. If you don't find the kind of data you want, try the soil surveys in the library (below).

2. Source for Soil information for California counties in the Library
Search the Library Catalog for the Subject: soils california [name of county] to find soil maps and soil surveys of the county in our collection here in the building.

3. Some Sources for the Industry/Commodity Assignment

The industries or services are arranged by SIC code with indexes to products, companies, and brands. Look at SIC codes 2011 through 2099 for food related industries. Check several recent years.

You can also search databases (such as Proquest Databases or Lexis/Nexis) for market share (example: coffee AND market share)

Look at SIC codes 2011 through 2099 for food related industries (Volume 5). Look at NAICS codes 31111-312229 for food related industries (volume 8).

Has price and supply data for items traded on commodities futures exchanges.

Business Resources You can look at some of the mainstream Business Sources, but be warned that many smaller industries and companies are not covered.

Finding Trade Journals:

1. Search the Proquest Databases

After selecting the Proquest Databases from the Databases Page, do a subject search. Click on the "Trade Journals" tab to limit the search to trade journals. Most of the articles listed in this database are in full text, so you can usually click through to read the actual article.Screen Shot from an ABI/Inform Search

2. Search the Library Catalog:

Above: Change the parameters of the search: do a "word" search using a term for your industry ANDed with the word industry ("food AND industry", "wine AND industry", "supermarket AND industry"). Also change the pull down to search only periodicals/newspapers.,

Below: The results screen from the search above. Click on a title of any likely looking periodicals to find out what issues the library has of this title. The Library's holdings may include bound paper copies, microfiche, or online.

Once you have found a journal with current issues, go to its call number location on the fourth floor (or location indicated by the catalog) and look through the issues.
