Following is a list of about 300 words - a great many of which will probably be new to you. You will need to know these words and others in order to follow the reading assignments, laboratory exercises and lectures for the second five weeks of ZOO 137. The list is drawn from assigned reading in your textbook and laboratory manual and from lecture material. The list, as amended, will be the subject of VOCABULARY EXAM B and will provide a study basis for the the companion lecture and lab exams. "As amended" means that you should be quick to pick up on -- and learn -- any other new words that you hear in the course as you will need to know them to understand what I say, what you read or what you are asked on an examination. Make it a habit to ask me about words you hear or read that are new to you -- and not just zoological terms.
Words on this list in boldface are proper names (Know what a "proper" name is? Are there any "improper" names?). Except asterisked species names, proper names must always be capitalized. Names of genera (What's "genera" the plural of?) and species (asterisked names) must also be italicized or underlined when you write them out. Words that are underlined are those whose etymologies you must learn (Know what an "etymology" is? What "entomology" is?) - they will be the ones you see in the "Bits-and-Pieces" part of the vocabulary exam.
