4/10 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a 4/10 schedule?
4/10 refers to an employee working four (4) consecutive days of ten (10) hours each (Monday through Thursday) as opposed to the standard five, eight-hour days( 5/8s).

Why is Cal Poly Pomona instituting a 4/10 schedule during the summer?
To reduce energy costs and to reduce our carbon footprint with energy, utility, and environmental savings. The 4/10 schedule will also provide faculty and staff with the opportunity to reduce their commute costs during the summer months as fuel prices rise.

When will the 4/10 schedule be in effect?
The 4/10 schedule begins on Monday, June 16, 2008, and ends on Friday, August 29, 2008. During this period there will be two work weeks wherein the campus will revert to the standard five, eight-hour days (5/8s)--the weeks of June 30th through July 4th and the week of July 28th through August 1st. These schedule adjustments back to the 5/8 are required for compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

During the 4/10 schedule when will campus offices normally be open to students and the public?
During the 4/10 schedule, campus offices will normally be open to students and the public from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday (please note exceptions on the 4/10 calendar).
Friday will not be a regular work day for most campus employees. Only those work units requiring 24-hour coverage or extended service days/hours will continue to operate on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

What if I have a special circumstance that will make it difficult to work 4/10s?
Communicate with your manager to let them know the reason(s) working 4/10s is difficult. Complete the 4/10 Summer Work Schedule Hardship Request Form to request an exception/alternative arrangement.
