Welcome to Environmental Design

Welcome to the College of Environmental Design (ENV).  Our college is committed to improving communities and resolving pressing problems facing society.  With a unique integration of the arts, architecture, landscape architecture, regenerative studies, and urban and regional planning, as well as a “learn by doing” approach grounded in the polytechnic tradition, ENV is positioned to be a leader in design excellence and innovative problem-solving for communities in Southern California and around the globe.  This leadership is demonstrated by ENV’s nationally-ranked educational programs and award-winning research, scholarship, creative activities, and outreach.

The ENV approach is:

  • Action-oriented – in synthesizing creative, analytical, and evaluative processes in developing effective solutions to complex problems.
  • Committed to service – by working with real communities to address real problems.
  • Environmentally sustainable – by designing regenerative systems for communities that minimize inputs while restoring and revitalizing key resources.
  • Socially engaged - in supporting the cause for basic human rights and promoting advocacy for issues that improve communities.
  • Culturally relevant – by encouraging creative expression, effective advocacy, and stewardship of the natural and built environment that resonates with the needs, preferences and interests of our multi-cultural society.

I invite you to explore our web site to learn more about our departments, centers, and programs, as well as our diverse community of students, staff and faculty.  I believe you will find this community and their collective work to be as impressive and inspiring as I have during my participation in the college over the past 10 years.
