Membership in any of the student organizations affiliated with Cal Poly Pomona is encouraged as a vital and active part of the preparation of an engineering student for entry into the profession. Active participation in such groups is as necessary for success as are academic accomplishments. Because engineering in practice is a team effort, strong people skills lead to significantly more frequent opportunities for career advancement. Involvement in student organizations provides the exposure to team situations needed to hone these skills and develops in students the confidence that will be need in dealing with others and with unexpected difficulties throughout the student's career. Involvement gives first-hand exposure to the demands of team leadership and strengthens the time and resource management skills necessary for success. Departments in the College of Engineering have student chapters of both national professional and honor societies appropriate to their disciplines. In addition, student chapters of inter-disciplinary organizations, peer-oriented groups and interest-centered clubs seek the active involvement of both engineering and non-engineering students alike. The Office of Student Life in the Division of Student Affairs is responsible for chartering student organizations each year. The student government activities on campus are conducted by Associated Students, Incorporated. For information on individual organizations, use the index below. If applicable, a link to the organization's website is provided with the entry. Each of the colleges 6 and schools 2 on campus have a council whose primary function is to serve as a communication link for student interests - among the clubs and ASI. The Councils also coordinate activities within their individual colleges, and both budget and dispense ASI allocations. A representative of each chartered student organization within the college is on the Council. The College of Engineering works with the Engineering Council members and Club leaders to strengthen their groups and develop their leadership skills. An annual Spring Leadership Retreat helps set the plans for the following school year and introduces the new officers to available sources of support.
