Welcome to the Training Course Description Page for the Environmental Health & Safety Department at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Please note that this page is under construction. This page was developed to provide description of the training courses provided by Environmental Health & Safety. The hope is that the increased availability of this information will improve the level of safety training for the campus community. Accident Investigation
Training covers the procedures for investigating an accident or near miss accident and determining the cause, in order to prevent future accidents and thereby reduce injuries and/or illnesses. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3203

Asbestos Awareness
This training provides information on the health hazards associated with exposure to Asbestos, the location of materials that contain Asbestos, how to identify materials that may contain Asbestos and how to avoid exposure. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 5208(o)(1) and CFR 29,1910, 1001

Back Safety
Teaches the student which movements cause back injury, which everyday activities may indirectly affect back mishaps, and how to prevent personal back injury, regardless of the environment. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3203

Bloodborne Pathogens
The course on Bloodborne Pathogens defines a bloodborne pathogen, explains their health hazards, relays possible routes of exposure in the workplace and OSHA requirements. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 5193(5)(C)

CPR/First‐Aid Training
Provides training on the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3400

Defensive Driving
This course trains individuals to be defensive drivers, helping them understand the risks, focus on the road and avoid dangerous driving practices. It examines vehicle inspection, distracted driving, the proper sitting position, the two-second rule and the no-zone concept. It also explains how drivers can sidestep the various challenges on the road: tailgating drivers, unique driving situations and hazardous conditions. Department Safety Coordinator
This is an on the job training on how to complete a Department Safety Coordinator Inspection.  The trainee will complete an inspection of their department while accompanied by a Trainer from Environmental Health & Safety.  Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3203

Electrical Power Generation
The course covers electrical principles and the efficient and safe operation of various devices and systems that produce, distribute, and use electricity. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 2299 et. Seq

Electrical Safety
Teaches the various considerations with electrical work, such as, dealing with electrical accidents, safe work practices with electrical equipment, and personal protective equipment for electrical work.  Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 2299 et. Seq

Emergency Procedures
The training covers University procedures to follow in emergencies to help save or at least lessen injuries to oneself, or others. Training can also help individuals to be prepared with the necessary equipment or materials when an emergency situation occurs. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3220(e)

Ergonomics
This course explains how individuals can avoid crippling injuries, minimize absenteeism, and increase their productivity with various safety practices on posture, lifting and handling equipment. The course also shows how individuals can interact in ergonomically friendly ways with their working environment..  Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3203 and 5110(b)(3)

Fall Protection
The course provides a thorough grounding on rescue techniques and procedures including fall arrest systems, positioning devices and equipment care and inspection. It also outlines vital rescue strategies. Fall Protection will help you comply with OSHA's Fall Protection Standard. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3638(d) and CCR T8, 3657(i)

Fire Extinguisher
This course provides attendees with hands on training on using a portable fire extinguisher.  Attendees will actually extinguish a small fire.  Portable fire extinguishers are not intended to be used for large fires; in case of a large fire, individuals sound alarms, contact the University Police and evacuate immediately. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 6151(g)(1)

Fire Safety
Fire Safety Training provides information on procedures to follow in case of fire.  Safety measures to reduce and even prevent injuries, death and damages caused by fire, and most importantly to help prevent fire from occurring.  Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3221(d) and CCR T8, 3221(d), 6151(g)(1)

Forklift Initial
This initial training provides information on the safe and proper operation of a Forklift for first time operators as required by Cal/OSHA.  The training includes hands-on operation of a Forklift.  Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3668

Hazard Communication
This training provides information on the Hazard Communication Standard and associated University procedures.  Employees are trained on how to determine the hazard of substances they will be working with, which helps to prevent or reduce injuries caused by working with these hazardous substances. Employees receive information on how to read labels and Material Safety Data Sheet, which are document containing detailed safety information on hazardous substances.  This knowledge will help employees determine and utilize precautions and protective equipment to prevent injuries. Hearing Protection
Discusses how the ear processes sound to the brain, the consequences of constant noise in the work place, hearing protection devices, and the requirements of the employer's hearing conservation program. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 5099

Indoor Cranes
Provides training on how to work safely with different types of cranes. It also covers pre-operation safety inspection, rigging techniques and lifting and moving guidelines. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3472(h)(1)

This course explains about the pro-active planning in Job Safety Analysis. It deals with effective leadership and preparation for a Job Safety Analysis..  Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3203

Laboratory Safety
This training covers working safely in a laboratory where individuals are exposed to chemical hazards, which can cause serious injuries or even death.  Safety procedures and practices  are covered to ensure the safety for all the laboratory workers.  Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 5191(f)

Laser Safety
This course highlights safety issues concerning working with and around various types of lasers. It outlines the various uses for industrial and construction lasers, the hazards these lasers pose, and the damage they can do if not used properly. It also explains how lasers are classified, the role of a Laser Safety Officer, how engineering and administrative controls keep you safe, and how safe work practices can minimize your risks when working with lasers.. Lockout/Tagout
This course details locking and tagging measures, including OSHA's six-step procedure, cites the hazards of uncontrolled energy and illustrates the gruesome results if they are neglected. Lockout/Tagout also discusses work performance and lock and tag removal in simulated work environments.  Legal Requirements: Section 117600 et. Seq. California Health & Safety Code

Medical Waste
Training covers the proper and safe management of infectious and/or medical waste.  Infectious and/or medical waste can cause injury and illness and adversely affect/damage the environment.  Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3314(a) and CFR 29,1910.147

Office Safety
This course explains the importance of office safety, teaches the student how to create a comfortable, ergonomically correct workstation, and how to avoid typical office hazards, such as slips, trips and falls, back injuries and working with hazardous materials. This course also teaches the student to recognize fire hazards, how to operate a fire extinguisher and how to respond in a fire emergency. The student will also learn how to prevent workplace crime and violence on the job as well as identify and manage stress. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3203

Personal Protective Equipment
Individuals face unique dangers depending on the job each one does. Accordingly, their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be used properly so that they can cope with the risks. This comprehensive PPE course, covers the safe and proper use eye, face, hearing, head, hand and foot protection, and other PPE rules.  Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3380(c)

Power Tools
This course explains safety precautions to follow when using saws, drills, pneumatic, and powder-actuated tools. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3203

Radiation Safety
Training includes the proper procedures for the safe and legal use of Radioactive Materials and Machines.  Information includes signage, storage, personal protective equipment, the use of time distance & shielding to reduce exposure, waste collection and proper disposal.  Legal Requirements: 10 CFR, CCR Title 17, 30100 et. Seq. and University Radioactive Materials License

Respirator
Training includes how to select and use a respirator to protect employees and other individuals from the inhalation of dust, vapors, gases, and other harmful airborne contaminants. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 5144(c)

Respirator Fit Testing
The purpose of respirator fit testing is to make sure the respirator is fitting properly. Attendees are required to bring their respirators and will be tested to make sure the respirator is fitting properly. Attendees are required to have obtained a Respirator Clearance from a Physician and completed respirator training before attending. Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 5144(c)

Safety Orientation
Training covers safety awareness and orientation for individuals working in non-office environments.  individuals need to be alert, aware of their surroundings and ready to respond to the unexpected. This course will help keep them alert to hazards on the job. It will remind them to protect themselves by following safety procedures and by using the right protective equipment for the job, and to use precaution around hazardous substances – all important parts of doing their jobs well and going home safe.  Provides an overview of the following topics: Slips, Trips & Falls; Back Safety; Hazard Communication; Bloodborne Pathogens; Lockout/Tagout; Head Protection; Eye Protection; Hearing Protection; Respiratory Protection and Hand & Foot Protection.  Legal Requirements: CCR T8, 3203

Safety Training Workshop for Managers and Supervisors

Training provides information on safety management leadership for Managers, Supervisors and Department Chairs.  The training is designed to enable attendees to:

  • Understand the safety responsibilities of supervisors, upper management and employees.
  • Know the procedure’s for accident prevention and the steps to take should any accident, serious or minor, occur.
  • Realize the direct and indirect cost of accidents/incidents.
  • Know the best approach to safety performance on the job.
  • Understand the necessity for providing safety training for employees.
  • Understand the importance of conducting continuous and formal safety inspections using a checklist.
  • Understand the purpose of an inspection program.
  • Understand the purpose and objective of accident reporting.
  • Understand the emergency procedures for your department.
