Off-campus Wireless Networking – Risks of Wireless Networking

There are risks associated with wireless networking. It is important to understand these risks to know why you should take the time to properly secure your wireless network.

Eavesdropping

Wireless access points are by default configured to allow anyone to connect without authorization. In addition,by default all data sent over a wireless network is sent in plain text. These two issues combined make it very easy for an attacker to view all data sent over a wireless network. By doing this, someone can read your email, see the websites you visit, and more.

Stolen/Erased Files

If you share files on your computer, an improperly configured wireless network could allow an attacker to steal your files or erase them from your computer. In addition, an attacker could wipe out all the data on your hard drive.

Slow Network Performance

If unknown and unauthorized individuals are connecting to your wireless network, they will be using your internet connection. One unauthorized connection could have a severely negative affect on the speed of your internet connection.

Implication in Illegal Activities

If a malicious attacker uses you unsecured wireless network for criminal activies, you may be implicated, since you are the registered owner of the wireless network. Law enforcement will likely not be able to track down a criminal who is using your wireless network for illegal activities.
