Step-by-Step Instructions to Connect to VPN - Windows XP
This guide will assist you in connecting your Windows XP computer to the
Cal Poly Pomona VPN. These instructions will cover the installation of the
VPN client for Windows XP.
Create the VPN connection
Note: These instructions are based on the "Category View" of the Control
Panel.
- Click Start > Control Panel.
- Click on the Network and Internet Connections icon.

- Click on the Create a connection to the network at your workplace icon.
- Select Virtual Private Network connection.

- Click Next.
- Within the Connection Name window, name the VPN connection (i.e. CSU
Pomona VPN).
- If a "Public Network: Windows can make sure the public network is connected first"dialogue window appears, select "Do not dial the initial
connection", and click Next.

- Within the field "Host name or IP Address:", enter vpn.csupomona.edu.
- Click Next.
- Within the Connection Availability window, it is recommended that you
choose "My use only".
- Click Next.
- Check "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop".
- Click Finish.
Configure the VPN connection
- Click Start > Control Panel.
- Click on the Network and Internet Connections icon.
- Within the Network and Internet Connections window, click on the Network
Connections icon.

- Right click on the new VPN connection (not Local Area
Connection or your existing dial-up).

- Select Properties.
- Select the "Networking" tab.
NOTE: Depending upon your ISP, you may need to change the "Type of VPN" setting from "Automatic" to "PPTP
VPN".
- Verify that Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is highlighted.
- Click on the Properties button.

- Within the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties window, click on the
Advanced... button

- Within the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window, REMOVE the check mark next
to Use default gateway on remote network.
- Click "OK" to close all open windows.
Logging into the VPN
- Connect to the Internet as you normally would (i.e. dial-up, DSL, etc).
- Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
- Double click the Dial-Up
Networking icon.
- Double click on the VPN connection icon you just created (i.e. CSU Pomona
VPN).
- Within the "Connect To" box, enter your network password. Your network password is NOT the same as your email password, which is more commonly referred to as your BroncoPassword.
