eHelp construction manual and style guide

General guidelines

  1. All eHelp pages must use the eHelp template, which controls the look and feel of the page and also constrains the width of the content to about 650 pixels.
  2. New eHelp pages must be integrated in the existing navigation, which usually requires consultation.
  3. Each eHelp page has a "bread crumb trail" (see the example above). The HTML <title> of the page (see the bar at the top of the browser window) consists of the same items as the breadcrumb trail, but in reverse order. The main page heading (the large green letters above) is ordinarily the last item of the breadcrumb trail.
  4. Pages on eHelp make liberal use of Heading 2, Heading 3, and numbered and bulleted lists to organize information. Use the HTML defaults for these (the stylesheets make them look right) rather than trying to invent some new kind of markup.
  5. Screen shots should ordinarily be saved as .gif or paletted .png files – not as .jpg. Screen shots are ideally pixel-for-pixel the same size as they appeared on the original screen. Never make them larger, and try to avoid making them smaller (if they are too large for the page, try cropping them to the area of interest first). For more information on making screen shots, please see Making eHelp screen shots.
  6. When using a screen shot in a numbered or bulleted list, type Shift-Enter (to put in a break) and then insert the screen shot.
  7. The style sheets automatically provide spacing around screen shots – there is no need to add more.
  8. Likewise, the style sheets format tables appropriately. Never hesitate to use tables for tabular information. There will ordinarily be no need to use tables for layout.
  9. SPAM is a registered trademark of Hormel Foods, LLC. Unsolicited commercial email is spam, lower-case.
