Spyware and Adware are real threats to the integrity of your computer system, email, and other data. This site will help you as a Cal Poly Pomona student, staff, or faculty member to better understand, prevent, scan and clean all types of Spyware.
Spyware, Malware, or Adware are programs that get loaded on your computer generally from the Internet. They can come from a website with or without your knowledge. Spyware is software that is covertly installed on a machine without explicit permission for the purpose of collecting information about a user or corporation to be returned to an unauthorized third party, thus compromising the security of sensitive or proprietary information.
Initially designed to monitor a user's online activity in order for marketers to deliver targeted advertisements, spyware is now being used for more malevolent purposes such as gathering passwords, personal e-mail addresses, contact information, credit card and account numbers, confidential documents and records, etc.
We have put together some additional information and locations where you can find useful information regarding spyware. Additionally, we've included a link where you can download spyware and adware blockers. (Links to software are provided for information only; Cal Poly Pomona does not endorse or support any of these programs.)
