Configure Thunderbird to access the Exchange Server
Note: We are ensuring that our email is even more secure by supporting "Secure Socket Layer" (SSL) for our Webmail, POP, IMAP and SMTP servers.
If you need to send or receive email before completing configuration of your local email client, you can still access email through your web browser interface at:
https://exchange.csupomona.edu.
Pre-Configuration Settings:
- NOTE: Only perform the following "Pre-Configuration Settings" if your computer is NOT a part of the campus WIN domain.
- Click Start > Control Panel.
- Double click Network and Internet Connections.
- Click on Network Connections or click Start > Settings > Network Connections if you are using the “Classic Start Menu”.
- Right click on Local Area Connection or your dial-up connection.
- Click on Properties.

- Double-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

- Click Advanced.

- Click on the DNS tab, then click in the "Append these DNS suffixes (in order):" field.
- Click in the Add button.

- Type in win. csupomona.edu, as shown below, then click the Add button.

- Click Add once more, and this time, type in csupomona.edu. Click Add.

- Once you have these two suffixes added, the DNS tab will have "win.csupomona.edu" and "csupomona.edu" listed in the "Append these DNS suffixes" window.

- Click OK on the following three screens to exit the properties.
- Click Close when you get back to the Local Area Connection Status screen.
- You are now ready to configure Outlook to receive your Exchange mail.
Thunderbird Configuration:
NOTE: If you have not yet migrated from Eudora to Thunderbird, implement the following directions before proceeding to the configuration instructions below.
Migrating from Eudora to Thunderbird:
- If you are starting up Thunderbird for the very first time, the Import Wizard will pop up, and you can then select the "Eudora" option to import your mail, address books and settings.
- Subsequent to launching Thunderbird for the first time, you can also go the the "Tools" menu, select "Import...", and then individually import your mail, address books or settings from Eudora.
Thunderbird Configuration Instructions:
- Under the Tools drop-down menu click Account Settings (Alternatively, you can click View Settings for this Account on Thunderbird’s main screen).


- Click Server Settings to display the Server Settings configuration screen.
- Enter exchange.csupomona.edu where it says Server Name.
- Under Secure Settings, select SSL.
Note: This setting will automatically change the default port.
- Click OK.

- Click Outgoing Server (SMTP) to display the Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings configuration screen.
- Verify that smtp.csupomona.edu is listed where it says Server Name.
- Select SSL for "Use secure connection".
Note: This setting will automatically change the default port to 465.
Note: If for some reason the SSL option is not engaging, de-select the SSL option and ensure that the port number is 25.
- Click OK to save your Incoming and Outgoing server settings.

- On the main Thunderbird screen, click Inbox (if more than one Inbox is listed, click on the one directly under your Cal Poly Pomona email address).

- When prompted, enter your BroncoPassword.
- If you would like Thunderbird to remember your password, check the box next to Use Password Manager to remember this password.
- Click OK. Thunderbird is now correctly configured to work with Cal Poly Pomona’s Exchange server.

NOTE: In order to view additional Exchange folders—Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, etc.—in Thunderbird, you will have to add (subscribe to) them by following steps 11 through 15 below.
- On Thunderbird’s main screen right click on your account name (your Cal Poly Pomona email address).
- Click Subscribe.

- Select the Exchange folders to which you’d like to subscribe by checking the appropriate boxes.
- Click Subscribe.
- Click OK. You have now completed the folder subscription process.

Configure Thunderbird to use SSL POP3 connection
- Click Tools > Account Settings.
- Click Add Account.
- Select Email account > Click Next.
- Enter your full name into the field labeled Your Name, and enter your Cal Poly Pomona email address into the field labeled Email Address, then click Next.
- Select POP.
- For the Incoming Server, enter "exchange.csupomona.edu".
- Click Next.
- For the Incoming User Name, enter your BroncoName.
- Click Next.
- Enter an Account Name (This will help you identify this account if you have multiple accounts within Thunderbird).
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- Click Edit - Account Settings.
- Click Server Settings under the Account Name you entered.
- Place a check mark in the "Use secure connection (SSL)" box, and make sure the port is set to 995.
- Click the Outgoing Server (SMTP):
- Enter "smtp.csupomona.edu" for Outgoing Mail Server.
- Uncheck Use name and password.
- Select SSL under Use secure connection.
Note: This setting will automatically change the default port to 465.
Note: If for some reason the SSL option is not engaging, de-select the SSL option and ensure that the port number is 25.
- Click OK.
