Doreen Nelson, recognized by the New York Times as one of the thirty most innovative educators in the USA is an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects. She is the Director of the Center for City Building Education (CBE), a non-profit organization formed in 1969, an author, producer and director of educational films and a major contributor to computer design firms.

Professor Nelson teaches in the School of Education and Integrative Studies and is an Adjunct Professor in the College of Environmental Design at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California.

Nelson pioneered the field of design thinking in education after ten years of teaching in elementary and secondary schools. She developed and implemented the use of specific methods to speed up the thinking skills associated with design and creativity known as CBE. Her methodology uses the built environment of the city in which students - of any age - design and construct a city of the future in their classroom to unlock and speed up the transformational skills associated with original thought. The methodology demonstrates how design and creativity enhance and extend the teaching of math, sciences, language arts and social studies. It has been practiced world-wide in public schools, museums and universities.

At Cal Poly, Pomona in the School of Education and Integrative Studies she created the nation's first master of arts degree program in education with an emphasis on Design and Creativity: Applying Technology - based on the CBE methodology. CBE is also used in a Concurrent Multiple Subjects/Learning Handicaps Credential Program at San Jose State University.

A Japan-USA Cultural and Educational Exchange Program started in 1994 sponsored by Cal Poly and funded by government agencies and architectural institutes introduces CBE into the Japanese national curriculum. In Japan at the Sendai Science Museum over 60,000 visitors attended a three month hands-on CBE exhibition in 1996. With the New York City Partnership for Arts and Education (NYCPAE) - as part of their three year Annenberg Grant - Nelson is conducting professional staff development workshops on designing a multicultural context for learning. She is also serving as an advisor for the Getty's Art and Science project.

Nelson continues to be at the forefront of computer software development. For MAXIS, she helped design award winning SimCity and SimLife and wrote their curriculum guides for teachers. The latest in 1999 is an electronic teacher's guide to SimCity 3000. She has worked with Interval Research, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the Edison Project school reform effort and with the Milken Family Foundation developing exhibitions for their Museum of Creativity. For ten years she was a consultant to Alan Kay of Apple Computer's Research Lab.

Nelson's research has been funded since l97l by the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council, the California Community Foundation, the United States Department of Education, the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, the Atlantic Richfield Foundation, Apple Computer Corporation and participating schools. Her range of work includes courses and projects conducted at USC, UCLA, Stanford University, Harvard University and the Royal College of Art in London. She has spoken at conferences, written books, produced and directed films.
