Research Paper
Parameters:

1. Papers must be on (approved) topics in forensic science with a self conscious awarenes of the fact that:
a. this is an anthropology course
b. this is a synthesis course

2. Length must be ten to twelve (10-12) pages (of text) typed; standard margins and 12 point type

3. Citations must--no exceptions-- be in American Anthropological Association format with intralinear citations, References Cited at the end

4. Three to five (3 - 5) primary sources must be used as the basis of the paper: electronic papers willbe failed (web references may only be used as support, and then only if the author is identified (i.e.,
no anonymous, Encarta, or encyclopedia sources permitted). Course textbooks are also off limits.

October 6 -- Outline for the paper
November 3 - Rough Draft - Incl.Refs.Cited
November 22 - Final paper due

SOME POSSIBLE TOPICS

Within Forensic Anthropology Itself:
• Methods for calculating stature: (e.g., Fully-Pineau method; Trotter-Gleser method)
• Methods for determining gender: (e.g., pubic symphysis; sub-pubic angle; sciatic notch; preauricular sulcus; supraorbital tori; mastoid process)
• Methods for determining age: (tooth eruption; epiphyseal closure; suture closure)
• Methods for determining race (ancestry): (skull formation; orbital conformation; mandibular-maxillary occlusion)
• Pathology(ies) (various: work related; disease related; nutrition/dietary related; cause of death)
• Palaeopathology(ies) (various: as preceding, but also evidentiary of warfare, cannibalism, trophy collecting)
