The Geological Sciences Department provides high quality education in Earth Science and its applications. Through hands-on learning methods, faculty-mentored research, and exposure to current technology, students shall acquire skills applicable to careers in Earth Science and related disciplines. The Department’s programs emphasize understanding of Earth system processes and their interrelationships, thereby providing students a global perspective needed for problem solving, decision making, and leadership roles in a rapidly-changing world confronted with environmental challenges.

Hands-on Learning in GeologyA dynamic and growing department, Geology conducts research throughout the American Southwest, neighboring Mexico and Central America. In keeping with the Cal Poly philosophy of "Learn By Doing" we place strong emphasis on field-based learning as an integral part of our curriculum. The Senior Thesis provides majors with the opportunity to conduct independent research in fields of interest, leading to contacts within the geoscience community, as well as preparation for careers and graduate school.
