College of Engineering Symposium Day Information
Date: May 30, 2008; 1:00-5:00pm
Presentation Format: Students will present their senior projects as an oral presentation, or in a poster format or both. Students should see their senior project advisors to determine their presentation format.
Tips for Effective Technical Presentations (both oral and poster):
Michael Alley's Book The Craft of Scientific Presentations and accompanying website (note the arrow at the bottom of the page) is highly recommended for tips on how to give an effective technical presentation. On the website you can find sample power point slides and technical posters. An additional sample poster can be found here.
Poster Presentations:
- The poster session will last from 1pm- 5pm. The poster should be manned throughout this time period. unless you are also giving an oral presentation. Team members can arrange shifts.
- Poster presentations will take place in rooms: 9-401, 9-435 and 9-431
- Your room assignment will be printed in the technical program not yet available.
- Rooms 9-435 and 9-431 have PCs and full internet access as well as access to electronic benches for demonstrations.
- Posters should be displayed on a standard display board and adhere to good technical presentation practice
- Presenters should arrive early to set up their display boards and demonstrations. The rooms will be open at noon.
Oral presentations:
- Oral presentation sessions will last from 2pm-5pm.
- Presentations will be 35 minutes long and should include time for answering questions. There will be 10 minutes in between presentations.
- Presenters should arrive before 2pm and download their presentations before the sessions start. the rooms will be open at noon.
- Rooms will be equipped with a PC, an overhead projector and have internet access.
- Presentations should adhere to good technical presentation practice
- Your room assignment will be printed in the technical program not yet available.
Presenters with both posters and oral presentations:
-During your oral presentation, you may leave your poster unmanned. Signs will be provided at your poster booth announcing your presentation.
Final Technical Report:
For your final Senior project write-up you may find Michael Alley's Book, The Craft of Scientific Writing , and accompanying website to be helpful. Additionally you may wish to use the ASEE/IEEE format or IEEE format for your final paper. The IEEE Author Digital Toolbox provides sample temples as well as a style manual for the IEEE format.
