Earns All-Region Honors
Cal
Poly Pomona senior makes Far West Region team
POMONA
– Lisa Araujo, Cal Poly Pomona’s leading scorer,
was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s
Division II Far West Region second team in voting done by
the region coaches.
Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS), who scored six goals
and had four assists for 16 points, led the Broncos in scoring
this past season. She helped Cal Poly Pomona record a 9-7-2
overall record and advance to the California Collegiate Athletic
Association Championship Tournament for an unprecedented seventh
straight season.
There were 11 players named to the NSCAA Far West Region first
team and Araujo was one of the 11 players named to the second
team. Seattle and Seattle Pacific dominated the selections,
combining for nine of the 11 first-team spots.
Araujo was one of only nine CCAA players selected to the All-Region
squads.
This is the second All-Region honor of Araujo’s career.
She was also named to the All-Far West Region second team
in 2002.
Araujo was named to the All-CCAA first team earlier this month,
earning all-conference honors for the fourth straight year.
She was the conference Freshman of the Year in 2001 and then
earned first-team honors the next three seasons.
She concluded her Cal Poly Pomona career with 26 goals and
15 assists. The 26 goals place her sixth on the all-time Cal
Poly Pomona list. She also has 67 total points, which also
place her sixth.

Fall In Tournament Game
Cal
Poly Pomona’s women lose to Chico State, 2-0
CARSON
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
made its record seventh straight appearance in the California
Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament, but,
unfortunately for the Broncos, the latest trip was a short
one.
The Broncos fell behind early and lost to North Division champion
Chico State, 2-0, Friday in a CCAA semi-final game at Cal
State Dominguez Hills. Cal Poly Pomona (9-7-4) lost to the
Wildcats for the second time this season and had its six-game
unbeaten string ended.
Cal Poly Pomona held a 17-12 advantage in shots, including
a 13-3 edge in the second half. The Broncos, though, were
unable to get one past Chico State goalkeeper C.J. Jimenez.
Jimenez made a pair of saves, including one on a shot by Jacqueline
Ragudos (Fr., San Diego, U. of San Diego HS) that seemed destined
to find the back of the goal in the second half. Jimenez was
able to dive on the ball just as it was crossing the goal-line.
The Broncos had two other close calls in the second half,
but were stopped just short.
Ragudos, the CCAA Freshman of the Year, had four shots for
the Broncos, while Jamie Venegas (Jr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos
HS) had three shots.
Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) was unable to start
the game because of a severe hamstring pull, but she got into
the game late in the first half and almost scored a goal that
would have cut the deficit in half. Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho
Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS) also had a dangerous shot that was
knocked away by a Chico State defender before it reached the
goal.
Amy Swanson scored both Chico State goals. First, she beat
Cal Poly Pomona goalie Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland
HS) to a cross and knocked in a shot from 10 yards out in
the 22nd minute. Then, 16 minutes later, she took another
cross and knocked a shot into the upper near corner.
Richardson had two saves for the Broncos.
The result meant the end of the Cal Poly Pomona careers for
Araujo, Rudolph, Kristin Ramaglia (Sr., San Diego, Cal State
San Bernardino), Nicole Munoz (Sr., Claremont, Mt. San Antonio
College), Rocio Real (Sr., Upland, Mt. San Antonio College)
and Jillian Burdwell (Sr., Ontario, Upland HS).

Get Seven On All-CCAA Teams
Cal
Poly Pomona’s Jacqueline Ragudos is named Freshman of
the Year
WALNUT
CREEK – Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer
team had seven players honored when the California Collegiate
Athletic Association announced its 2004 All-CCAA teams Thursday
night.
The Broncos, who appeared in their record seventh CCAA Championship
Tournament, had two players receive first-team honors, while
another received second-team recognition.
Cal Poly Pomona’s Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr., San Diego,
U. of San Diego HS) was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year.
Rachele McDonald of Cal State Dominguez Hills was named the
CCAA Player of the Year, while Chico State’s Kim Sutton
was named the CCAA Coach of the Year.
Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) earned All-CCAA honors
for a fourth straight season for the Broncos and was named
to the first team for a third straight time. She leads the
Broncos in scoring with six goals, four assists and 16 total
points. Erica Rodriguez (Jr., San Diego, Bonita Vista HS)
also earned first-team honors for the Broncos after making
the All-CCAA squad for the first time in her career. She has
six goals and 12 points for the Broncos and was the CCAA Player
of the Week for the week of Oct. 25-31. Both Araujo and Rodriguez
are forwards.
Ragudos, another forward, earned second-team honors for the
Broncos after becoming the first Cal Poly Pomona women’s
soccer player since Araujo in 2001 to be named the conference’s
top freshman. She shares the team-lead in goals with six and
is second in scoring with 14 total points.
Cal Poly Pomona also had four players earned honorable mention.
Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS), Megan McGregor
(Fr., Garden Grove, Pacifica HS), Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho
Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS) and Jamie Venegas (Jr., Lakewood,
Los Alamitos HS) all received conference recognition.
Rudolph, a forward, was honored for the third time. She earned
honorable mention in 2001 and second-team honors in 2002.
She has three goals and two assists for eight points this
season. Richardson, a goalkeeper who posted five shutouts
for the Broncos, McGregor, a defender and Venegas, a midfielder,
received All-CCAA recognition for the first time in their
Cal Poly Pomona careers. Venegas has two goals and two assists.
Her younger brother, Dustin (Fr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS)
earned second-team All-CCAA honors on Thursday.
Rodriguez
Named CCAA Player of the Week
Cal Poly Pomona forward
shares honor with Chico State’s Fenton
WALNUT
CREEK -- Cal Poly Pomona’s Erica Rodriguez (Jr., San
Diego, Bonita Vista HS) has been named the Brine California
Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Co-Player
of the Week for the week of Oct. 25-31.
Rodriguez shared the honor with Chico State’s Bridget
Fenton, who had the game-winning goal in a 2-1 Wildcat win
over Sonoma State on Saturday.
Rodriguez was instrumental in helping the Broncos qualify
for the CCAA Championship Tournament for a seventh straight
year. Ironically, the Broncos will face Chico State, the North
Division champion, in a first-round match on Friday at Cal
State Dominguez Hills.
Rodriguez helped the Broncos score victories over UC San Diego
and Cal State Bakersfield and then tie Cal State Dominguez
Hills in games last week.
Rodriguez scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner
with 7:54 remaining in regulation, to lead the Broncos past
four-time defending CCAA champion UC San Diego, 4-3, last
Monday in La Jolla. She then scored the lone goal in a 1-0
win over Cal State Bakersfield last Wednesday that clinched
the tournament berth for the Broncos.
For the week, Rodriguez had three goals and six points. She
leads the Broncos with four game-winning goals among her six
goals scored this season.

Finish Regular-Season With Tie
Cal
Poly Pomona’s women settle for 2-2 draw with Toros
POMONA
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
finished its regular season with a tie against a familiar
foe and will now set its sight on the California Collegiate
Athletic Association Championship Tournament.
The Broncos erased a two-goal second-half deficit and settled
for a 2-2 tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday at Kellogg
Field. Cal Poly Pomona (9-6-4, 8-2-4) finishes with 28 points
and is tied with UC San Diego for the CCAA South Division
lead. The Tritons have one game remaining on their schedule,
a match Monday with Cal State San Bernardino. At worst, the
Broncos have claimed at least the first wildcard in the conference
and will make their record seventh appearance in the CCAA
Championship Tournament.
The Toros (12-5-3, 8-3-3) finished with 27 points and wrapped
up the second wildcard spot and will host the CCAA Tournament
beginning next Friday.
The Toros had a golden opportunity to post a victory even
though they were forced to play one player short since the
23rd minute of the match when Corrie Hirokawa was sent off
after picking up a second yellow card. Cal State Dominguez
Hills held a 2-0 lead until the Broncos struck for two goals
in a six-minute span of the second half to knot the game.
Candace Hearn got the Toros on the board just 5:45 into the
match when she scored with an assist from Monique Castro.
The Toros made it 2-0 when Michelle Sena scored on a free
kick from a sharp angle that curved perfectly into the left
corner of the net and past Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Vanessa
Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) in the 52nd minute.
The Broncos cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 66th minute when
a long throw-in by Stephanie Mrazik (Fr., Brea, Brea-Olinda
HS) was batted around in front of the Toro goal and finally
kicked through a crowd and into the goal by Tia Rudolph (Sr.,
Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS).
Then, six minutes later, another throw-in by Mrazik found
Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr., San Diego, U. San Diego HS) and she
kicked the ball through Cal State Dominguez Hills goalie Mallory
Dominguez.
Dominguez made six saves for the Toros, while Richardson had
a pair of saves for the Broncos.
Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed a 15-8 edge in shots.
After an 0-4 start, Cal Poly Pomona is 9-2-4 in its last 15
matches.
Broncos
Grab South Division Lead
Cal
Poly Pomona’s women beat Cal State Bakersfield, 1-0
BAKERSFIELD
– They’re back.
Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team clinched
a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship
Tournament for an unprecedented seventh straight season after
a 1-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield Thursday night. The
Broncos (9-6-3, 8-2-3) won their fourth straight game and
moved into the CCAA South Division lead with 27 points. Cal
Poly Pomona will conclude its regular-season with a home match
against Cal State Dominguez Hills. A Cal Poly Pomona win and
a tie or loss by UC San Diego in its final two games will
give the Broncos their first South Division crown since 1999.
After an 0-4 start to the season, Cal Poly Pomona is 9-2-3
in its last 14 matches. The Broncos were ranked eighth in
the Far West Region entering this week's play. Cal Poly Pomona
is the only team to qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament
in all seven years of its existence.
The Broncos got the only goal they would need Thursday from
Erica Rodriguez (Jr., San Diego, Bonita Vista HS), who continued
her outstanding play of late. Rodriguez, who had two goals
including the game-winner on Monday against UC San Diego,
scored just 23 seconds into the second half. Sara Flowers
(Fr., Santee, Santana HS) made a great cross to Rodriguez,
who headed it into the goal from about 12 yards out.
The Cal Poly Pomona defense took over from there and the Broncos
posted their sixth shutout of the season. The Broncos enjoyed
a 15-6 edge in shots. Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland
HS) made three saves for Cal Poly Pomona, including a brilliant
stop of a shot from about 20 yards out, and recorded her fifth
solo shutout of the season.
The Broncos will face Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday
to conclude the regular season. The Toros are just one point
behind the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona will honor Jillian Burdwell
(Sr., Ontario, Upland HS), Nicole Munoz (Sr., Claremont, Mt.
San Antonio College), Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower
HS), Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS), Kristin
Ramaglia (Sr., San Diego, Cal State San Bernardino) and Rocio
Real (Sr., Upland, Mt. San Antonio College) in ceremonies
before the start of the game.
Broncos
Win A Thriller In La Jolla
Cal Poly Pomona’s women edge #17
UC San Diego, 4-3
LA JOLLA
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
picked a perfect time for one of its best offensive nights
of the season.
The Broncos exploded for three second-half goals and needed
every one them in a thrilling 4-3 win over No. 17 UC San Diego
Monday night in La Jolla. Cal Poly Pomona (8-6-3, 7-2-3) beat
the Tritons in La Jolla for the second straight season and
avenged an early-season loss to the Tritons at Kellogg Field.
Cal Poly Pomona won its third straight match and is now 8-2-3
in its last 13 games after starting the season with an 0-4
mark. The Broncos pulled to within one point of South Division
co-leaders UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills and
also helped their cause in the wildcard chase. The Broncos
hold a four-point lead over Cal State San Bernardino and a
five-point edge over Sonoma State with two matches remaining.
The Broncos are at Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday and
host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.
Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr., San Diego, U. of San Diego HS) and
Erica Rodriguez (Jr., San Diego, Bonita Vista HS) scored two
goals each for the Broncos, who scored four goals in a game
against the Tritons for the first time since 1990.
Rodriguez got the game-winner for the Broncos with 7:54 remaining
in regulation.
Ragudos gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when
she lobbed a shot over the UC San Diego goalie off a pass
from Chelsea Hipley (Jr., Sacramento, Woodcreek HS). UC San
Diego, though, tied the match in the 42nd minute and the teams
went into halftime tied at 1-1.
The second-half was a back-and-forth tussle between two familiar
foes. The Tritons took a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute, but
the advantage only lasted 46 seconds when Rodriguez scored
from the middle of the penalty area off a pass from Lisa Araujo
(Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS).
The Broncos then took a 3-2 lead in the 76th minute when Ragudos
scored again with assists from Jamie Venegas (Jr., Lakewood,
Los Alamitos HS) and Mary Real (Jr., Upland, Mt. San Antonio
College).
UC San Diego tied it in the 81st minute, but Rodriguez gave
the Broncos the win when she hammered a free ball in the middle
of field into the Triton goal.
The Tritons had a 14-8 advantage in shots. Vanessa Richardson
(Jr., Upland, Upland HS) made three saves for the Broncos.
The Broncos will be at Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday.
Broncos
Finally Get Above .500
Cal
Poly Pomona’s women blank Cal State L.A., 2-0
POMONA
– After starting the season with four losses in its
first four matches, Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s
soccer team is finally above the .500 mark.
The Broncos (7-6-1, 6-2-3) got first-half goals from Tia Rudolph
(Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS) and Jamie Venegas (Jr.,
Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) and beat Cal State L.A., 2-0, Saturday
night at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona moves two points ahead
of Sonoma State in the race for the second wildcard spot in
the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The two division
winners and next two point-scorers advance to the four-team
conference championship tournament. The Broncos are currently
third place in the CCAA South Division.
Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS), the team’s
leading scorer, assisted on both Cal Poly Pomona goals.
The Broncos got their first goal just 11 minutes into the
game. Araujo sent a pass toward the middle to a streaking
Rudolph, who beat Cal State L.A. goalie Reyna Coca to the
ball and knocked the ball into the net for her second goal
of the season.
The Broncos scored again less than nine minutes later and
Araujo started that scoring play as well. She passed again,
this time to Venegas, who beat Coca to the ball and got off
a shot that just found its way past the goal-line.
The Golden Eagles didn’t have many prime scoring chances,
but Cal State L.A. just missed scoring when a second-half
shot by Grisell Ramirez went off the crossbar and bounced
away.
Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed a 15-10 edge in shots. Coca made eight
saves for the Golden Eagles, who were outshot 11-3 in the
first half.
Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) made three saves
and recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to action on Monday when the Broncos
will visit South Division leader UC San Diego in a game postponed
last Wednesday because of rain.
Broncos
Rally For 2-1 Win Over Gators
Cal
Poly Pomona’s women get late goal from Erica Rodriguez
POMONA
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
got off to a slow start, but the Broncos certainly loved the
finish.
The Broncos, after falling behind 1-0 in a first-half dominated
by San Francisco State, struck twice in the second half and
beat the Gators, 2-1, Sunday at Kellogg Field. A goal by Erica
Rodriguez (Jr., San Diego, Bonita Vista HS) with three minutes
remaining was the game-winner. Cal Poly Pomona (6-6-3, 5-2-3),
which started the season with four consecutive losses, is
now at the .500 level for the first time this season.
The game was played in fairly windy conditions and the team
with the wind at its back generally controlled play. San Francisco
State (2-11-2, 1-7-2) had the better chances in the opening
half and grabbed a 1-0 lead. Lissette Garay knocked in a rebound
of a shot by Katie Klain that Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Vanessa
Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) dove to deflect.
The Broncos, with the wind behind them in the second half,
dominated action in the final 45 minutes. Lisa Araujo (Sr.,
Rialto, Eisenhower HS) headed in a cross from Chelsea Hipley
(Jr., Sacramento, Woodcreek HS) in the 53rd minute to knot
the score at 1-1.
Cal Poly Pomona kept the pressure on the Gators, but didn’t
get the game-winner until time was winding down. Jacqueline
Ragudos (Fr., San Diego, U. of San Diego HS) started the deciding
play with a shot that was deflected by San Francisco State
goalie Erin Clark. Araujo got to the rebound first and tapped
it over to Rodriguez, who directed the ball into the left
side of the goal with three minutes remaining.
Clark had six saves for the Gators, while Richardson had three
saves for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona had a 10-8 edge in
shots and an 8-1 advantage in the second half.
Broncos
Battle To A 2-2 Draw
Cal
Poly Pomona, Sonoma State settle for key CCAA tie
POMONA
– Two of the top California Collegiate Athletic Association
women’s soccer programs didn’t hurt their postseason
aspirations Friday night, but they didn’t help them,
either.
Cal Poly Pomona and Sonoma State battled to a 2-2 tie in a
premier conference battle Friday at Kellogg Field. With the
tie, Sonoma State (8-4-1, 5-3-1) remains one point ahead of
Cal Poly Pomona (5-6-3, 4-2-3) in the race for the second
wild card. The two division winners and the next two finishers
will advance to the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament.
The Broncos are the only team to reach the tournament in all
six years of its existence.
Sonoma State opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Khyra
Buchanan scored the first of her two goals. She headed in
a cross from Anne-Marie Miklos right in front of the goal
and past Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Vanessa Richardson (Jr.,
Upland, Upland HS). Nicole Munoz (Sr., Claremont, Mt. San
Antonio College) evened things up in the 32nd minute when
she blasted a clearing attempt through traffic and into the
Sonoma State net.
The Broncos then got the go-ahead goal when Jacqueline Ragudos
(Fr., San Diego, University of San Diego HS) curved a shot
that bounced off the inside of the right post and into the
net in the 74th minute.
Sonoma State got the equalizer in the 81st minute when Buchanan
headed in a cross from Megan Catton.
Both goalies were kept busy. Sonoma State’s Adena Miller
made six saves, while Richardson made five saves for the Broncos.
Sonoma State held a 15-14 edge in shots.
Cal Poly Pomona will be home again on Sunday to play San Francisco
State in a 3 p.m. contest.
Broncos
Fall To Chico State, 1-0
Cal
Poly Pomona unable to score against North Division leaders
CHICO
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
gave up its first goal in four games and it was enough to
hand the Broncos a defeat.
In a tight defensive struggle, Chico State got the game’s
only goal late in the first half and posted a 1-0 victory
over the Broncos Sunday afternoon. Cal Poly Pomona (5-6-2,
4-2-2) entered the game with three consecutive shutouts –
a tie with Cal State Bakersfield and wins over Cal State L.A.
and Cal State Stanislaus.
The Wildcats held a slim 7-6 advantage in shots. Chico State
had just two shots on goal, while Cal Poly Pomona managed
only one. Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Vanessa Richardson (Jr.,
Upland, Upland HS) made one save for the Broncos.
Chelsea Hipley (Jr., Sacramento, Woodcreek HS) had a pair
of shots for Cal Poly Pomona, while Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr.,
San Diego, University of San Diego HS) had the lone shot on
goal.
The Broncos, bidding to remain the only women’s soccer
program to qualify for every California Collegiate Athletic
Association championship tournament, face another wild-card
contender on Friday when Sonoma State visits Kellogg Field
for a 4:30 p.m. game.
Broncos
Post Another Shutout
Cal
Poly Pomona records 3-0 win at Cal State Stanislaus
TURLOCK
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
continued its defensive prowess and had one of its biggest
offensive performances as well.
The Broncos recorded their third straight shutout and got
a pair of goals from Erica Rodriguez (Jr., San Diego, Bonita
Vista HS) and beat Cal State Stanislaus, 3-0, Friday in a
California Collegiate Athletic Association match in Turlock.
Cal Poly Pomona (5-5-2, 4-1-1), which lost its first four
matches of the season, is 5-1-2 in its last eight contests.
The Broncos have three shutouts in a row, beginning with a
0-0 tie against Cal State Bakersfield and continuing with
wins over Cal State L.A. and Cal State Stanislaus.
Rodriguez scored her first two goals of 2004 in Friday’s
win. She put the Broncos ahead in the 21st minute with an
assist from Lindsey Latham (Fr., San Diego, Our Lady of Peace
HS).
Mary Real (Jr., Upland, Mt. San Antonio College) made it 2-0
late in the first half when she scored on an unassisted breakaway
in the 44th minute. It was Real’s first goal of the
season.
Rodriguez wrapped up the scoring in the 80th minute with an
unassisted goal.
Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) made three saves
to record the shutout. The Broncos enjoyed a 17-12 edge in
shots, including an 8-2 advantage in the first half. Cal Poly
Pomona also had five corner kicks while handing Cal State
Stanislaus (8-2-3, 3-2-2) only its second loss of the season.
The three goals scored by the Broncos were their second-highest
total of the season. Cal Poly Pomona beat Cal State Monterey
Bay earlier in the season, 6-0. Cal State Stanislaus entered
the game with seven shutouts and had allowed only five goals
all season. The Warriors allowed more than one goal in a game
for the first time this season.
The Broncos will continue their trip with a match at CCAA
North Division leader Chico State.

Post Shutout Win In Los Angeles
Cal
Poly Pomona blanks Golden Eagles, 1-0
LOS ANGELES
-- Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team recorded
its second shutout in a row, this time defeating Cal State
L.A. 1-0 at Jesse Owens Track Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos (4-5-2, 3-1-2) got off to a quick start against
the Golden Eagles (5-6, 2-4) with Jamie Venegas (Jr., Lakewood,
Los Alamitos HS) scoring just 2:35 into the contest. Chelsea
Hipley (Jr., Sacramento, Woodcreek HS) provided the assist
for the goal, which was the first of the season for Venegas.
Cal Poly Pomona held a 13-7 edge in shots. After a close first
half, the Broncos started to control the game in the second
period with Cal Poly Pomona enjoying an 8-3 edge in shots
over the Golden Eagles.
Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland,
Upland HS) made two saves to record her second shutout of
the season – and second in a row -- while Reyna Coca
had 10 saves for the Golden Eagles. Erica Rodriguez (Sr.,
San Diego, Bonita Vista HS) had three shots on goal for the
Broncos.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to action on Friday with a match
at Cal State Stanislaus at 3:00 p.m.
Broncos
Settle For 0-0 Tie
Cal
Poly Pomona controls action, but settles for draw
POMONA
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
did just about everything but score a goal Wednesday night
against Cal State Bakersfield.
The Broncos held a 13-3 edge in shots and had several dangerous
runs in the second half and in both overtime periods, but
had to settle for a 0-0 tie with the Roadrunners at Kellogg
Field. Cal Poly Pomona (3-5-2, 2-1-2) outshot the Roadrunners,
10-1, after the first half and had all five shots in the two
extra periods.
Cal Poly Pomona goalie Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland
HS) needed only one save to record her first shutout of the
season, while Cal State Bakersfield’s Mary Ellen Arraztoa
made seven saves for the Roadrunners (1-7-3, 0-3-2).
The Broncos’ best chance at scoring came late in the
second half when Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Alta
Loma HS) drilled a left-footed shot that appeared headed into
the goal, but Arraztoa made a diving save to thwart the attack.
The Broncos then had a flurry at the end of the first overtime
that went for naught and then had a pair of flurries that
almost resulted in the golden goal that would have won the
game.
Rudolph, Erica Rodriguez (Jr., San Diego, Bonita Vista HS)
and Sara Flowers (Fr., Santee, Santana HS) combined for seven
shots on goal. Several other Bronco shots sailed just wide
of the goal.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to action on Sunday with a match
at Cal State L.A. at 3 p.m.
Broncos
Drop First Conference Match
UC
San Diego scores twice in second half for a 3-1 victory
POMONA
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
tasted defeat for the first time this season in California
Collegiate Athletic Association play.
The Broncos got a game-tying goal from Jacqueline Ragudos
in the 51st minute, but UC San Diego regained the lead less
than two minutes later and went on to a 3-1 victory Saturday
night at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (3-5-1, 2-1-1) falls
out of the South Division lead, which is now held by the defending
champion Tritons (7-1-0, 3-1-0).
UC San Diego scored two of its goals off of corner kicks,
which has been a staple for the Tritons against the Broncos
over the past few years. The Tritons got their first goal
in the 35th minute when Megan Dickey headed in a corner kick
from Kristina De La Rosa.
That was all the scoring in the first half and Ragudos (Fr.,
San Diego, U. of San Diego HS) evened the score for the Broncos
early in the second half with a great individual effort. Ragudos
dribbled through traffic in front of the UC San Diego goal
and, while fighting off a pair of defenders, got off a hard
shot that sailed just inside the left post.
It was only the third goal allowed this season by UC San Diego
goalie Jamie Lautenschleger.
The Tritons, though, bounced back quickly and took a 2-1 lead
on another goal off a corner kick. This time, Heather Sugg
headed in the kick from Dierker.
UC San Diego finished the scoring in the 71st minute with
a goal from Alise Malley. She got free in the box and knocked
a shot into the right corner of the net.
Cal Poly Pomona goalie Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland
HS) made three saves, including a penalty kick by UC San Diego’s
Ali Lai. She also stopped a rebound attempt by Lai to keep
the score close.
The two teams were even in shots, 8-8. Lautenschleger made
four saves for the Tritons.
The Broncos will conclude their four-game homestand with a
match against Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday.
Bronco Women
Rally For 1-1 Tie
Cal
Poly Pomona gets late goal from Araujo to earn draw
POMONA
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
needed a late goal to tie rival Cal State San Bernardino and
where else would the Broncos have looked besides Lisa Araujo?
Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) scored her fifth goal
in the last four games by knocking in the rebound of her own
penalty shot and lifted the Broncos to a 1-1 tie with Cal
State San Bernardino Tuesday at Kellogg Field. Araujo’s
goal came in the 75th minute and came after a Coyote player
was whistled for a hand ball in the penalty box.
Ironically, Cal State San Bernardino’s lone goal also
came as a result of a penalty kick, which Lauren Williams
drilled into the right side of the net past Cal Poly Pomona
goalkeeper Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS). The
Broncos were incensed when Richardson was issued a yellow
card after a collision with a Cal State San Bernardino player
near the goal that resulted in the penalty kick.
Cal Poly Pomona (3-4-1, 2-0-1) is now unbeaten in its last
four games after starting the season 0-4, while Cal State
San Bernardino (4-2-2, 2-0-1) has now allowed only one goal
in its three California Collegiate Athletic Association matches.
The Broncos and Coyotes are tied for the South Division lead
after three contests.
The game was evenly contested throughout and the Broncos wound
up with an 11-10 edge in shots.
Richardson made six saves for the Broncos, while Leslie Rhodes
made four saves for the Coyotes.
Rhodes made a dazzling deflection while diving to stop Araujo’s
penalty shot, but the Cal Poly Pomona forward raced to the
rebound in front of the net and knocked it in.
Richardson made a sensational save in the second overtime
to deny a golden opportunity by Williams from point-blank
range.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to action on Saturday against
defending CCAA champion UC San Diego in a 7 p.m. start at
Kellogg Field.

Women Blank Otters
Cal
Poly Pomona gets another goal from Araujo in win
POMONA
– After struggling to open the 2004 season, Cal Poly
Pomona’s women’s soccer team has quickly improved
its fortunes.
The Broncos won their third straight match – and second
in two California Collegiate Athletic Association games –
with a 6-0 win over CCAA newcomer Cal State Monterey Bay Friday
night at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (3-4, 2-0) opened
up a 3-0 lead by halftime and never let up against the Otters
(1-2-1, 0-1-0), who were making their conference debut.
Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) opened the scoring
in the 14th minute of the game and continued her goal-scoring
string. She now has four goals in the last three games and
has the game-winning goal in all three Bronco victories.
Stephanie Mrazik (Fr., Brea, Brea-Olinda HS), Karen Nembhard
(Fr., Pasadena, Pasadena HS), Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr., San
Diego, University of San Diego HS) and Kimberly Stillman (Fr.,
Arcadia, Arcadia HS) also scored goals for the Broncos. The
other goal was an own goal when Cal State Monterey Bay knocked
the ball into its own net.
The Broncos enjoyed a 19-2 edge in shots. Vanessa Richardson
(Jr., Upland, Upland HS) recorded one save and posted her
first shutout of the season.
Araujo, who scored both goals in the Broncos’ 2-1 win
over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday, gave the Broncos
an early lead on Friday when she knocked in the rebound of
her own shot that had bounced off the crossbar.
The Broncos extended their lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute
when Mrazik headed in a corner kick from Chelsea Hipley (Jr.,
Sacramento, Woodcreek HS). It was Mrazik’s first goal
at Cal Poly Pomona.
Cal Poly Pomona boosted its lead to 3-0 when a Cal State Monterey
Bay player accidentally kicked the ball past Otter goalie
Mallory Carroll in the 37th minute.
The second half continued much like the first. The Broncos
took a 4-0 edge in the 68th minute on Nembhard’s first
goal of the season. Mary Real (Jr., Upland, Mt. San Antonio
College) and Ragudos assisted on the play.
The lead grew to 5-0 thanks to an outstanding individual effort
by Ragudos, who maneuvered around three defenders in the box
and then rifled a shot into the left corner of the goal.
Stillman wrapped up the scoring in the 77th minute when she
headed in a cross from Jamie Venegas (Jr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos
HS).
The Broncos will return to action Tuesday with a home game
against Cal State San Bernardino.

Women Get A Big Win
Cal
Poly Pomona gets two goals from Araujo in 2-1 victory
CARSON
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
made sure its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener
would be a good one.
The Broncos spotted Cal State Dominguez Hills a quick 1-0
lead and then rallied behind the scoring of Lisa Araujo (Sr.,
Rialto, Eisenhower HS) and the defense of Vanessa Richardson
(Jr., Upland, Upland HS) to post a 2-1 victory at Toro Field.
Cal Poly Pomona (2-4, 2-0) has now won two straight games
since opening the season with four straight losses.
Araujo scored the game-tying goal in the 13th minute and then
got the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 66th minute.
Araujo has three goals in the past two games for the Broncos,
including both game-winners.
Richardson had six saves, including two big stops just before
halftime. Cal State Dominguez Hills was awarded a penalty
kick before the break, but Richardson stopped the initial
shot and then made another brilliant save on the rebound to
keep the game tied at 1-1.
Araujo was awarded a penalty kick in the second half for the
Broncos and she didn’t miss.
The Toros, who handed the Broncos a pair of one-goal defeats
last season, including one in the CCAA Championship Tournament,
took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Corrie Hirokawa just 6:24
into the game.
Araujo, though, quickly evened things up less than six minutes
later when she took a nice pass from Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho
Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS) and knocked her shot from six yards
out inside the left post.
Hirokawa had her penalty kick stopped by Richardson just before
halftime.
Araujo then converted her penalty kick in the second half
to give the Broncos the lead.
The teams were even in shots at 15-15. Both goalies, Richardson
and Cal State Dominguez Hills’ Mallory Dominguez, had
six saves.
Araujo now has three goals in the past two games, while Rudolph
has one goal and two assists.
The Broncos will return to action on Friday with a home game
against Cal State Monterey Bay.
Bronco
Women Notch First Win Of Season
Cal
Poly Pomona rallies for two second-half goals in 2-1 win
POMONA
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
finally got that elusive first victory of 2004.
The Broncos got second-half goals from Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho
Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS) and Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower
HS) and rallied for a 2-1 win over Concordia Friday night
at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (1-4-0) snapped a three-game
losing streak – all road games – that included
a pair of one-goal defeats.
Cal Poly Pomona started slowly and Concordia controlled most
of the first half, taking eight shots to only one for the
Broncos. The Eagles (0-3-1) got on the board in the 20th minute
when Nikki Fournier made a nice run into the left side of
the box and drilled a shot into the upper right hand corner
of the goal.
That score held up until the 57th minute when Rudolph got
a perfect cross from Sara Flowers (Fr., Santee, Santana HS)
and knocked in a shot from point-blank range.
Rudolph then set up the game-winner, passing to a breaking
Araujo, who faked out an onrushing goalie and kicked the ball
into an empty net.
Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) recorded six saves
for the Broncos, four of them in the first half while keeping
the Broncos close.
Cal Poly Pomona owned a slim 12-11 edge in shots, with 11
of them coming in the second period of play.
The Broncos will open California Collegiate Athletic Association
play on Tuesday in Carson against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Bronco Women

Cal
Poly Pomona loses to No. 22 Seattle Pacific
SEATTLE,
WA – Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
fell behind early and never recovered Monday evening in Seattle.
The Broncos surrendered two goals in the first 10 minutes
of the game and No. 22 Seattle Pacific went on to a 4-0 victory
over the Broncos at Interbay Stadium. Seattle Pacific led
3-0 at halftime.
Seattle Pacific won its 17th consecutive home game.
Cal Poly Pomona (0-3) will now be off until a Sept. 7 game
at Azusa Pacific.
Cal Poly Pomona’s best chance at scoring on Monday came
with less than 12 minutes to play when Kristi Ibello (So.,
Santa Rosa, Ursuline HS) headed a shot that was saved by Seattle
Pacific goalie Jennifer Hull and later cleared by a Falcon
defender.
Seattle Pacific owned a 16-8 advantage in shots and the Broncos
got only two shots on goal.
Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) played the first
half in goal for the Broncos and made one save. Kimberly Weiss
(Fr., Fresno, San Joaquin Memorial HS) made her Cal Poly Pomona
debut in goal in the second half and made a pair of saves.
The Broncos will be at Azusa Pacific next Tuesday, Sept. 7,
before returning to Kellogg Field on Friday, Sept. 10 for
a game against Concordia.

Women Drop Another Tough One
Cal
Poly Pomona loses on own goal to Western Washington, 1-0
BELLINGHAM,
WA – Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
came out on the short end of a tight game for the second straight
match.
After falling to Bryant University in overtime in their season
opener on Thursday, the Broncos were defeated by Western Washington,
1-0, Saturday in Civic Stadium. Cal Poly Pomona (0-2) will
conclude its trip to Washington with a game at Seattle Pacific
on Monday.
The Broncos held a slim 11-10 advantage in shots and had some
excellent scoring opportunities. In the final 10 minutes,
Western Washington’s Teresa Fish came out to cover some
dangerous long balls and a free kick in the final seconds
was cleared away by a Viking defender.
In the first half, a header by Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower
HS) went just wide in the 44th minute and a free kick Sara
Flowers (Fr., Santee, Santana HS) less than a minute later
hit the crossbar. The rebound went to Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho
Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS), but her shot was saved by Fish.
The only goal of the game came on a bad break for the Broncos.
A Western Washington cross in the 66th minute inadvertently
went off the heel of a Cal Poly Pomona defender and slipped
into the net.
Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) made four saves
for the Broncos.
Flowers had an impressive showing for the Broncos, taking
a game-high five shots, including the one that hit the crossbar.
Bronco
Women Stunned In Overtime
Cal
Poly Pomona falls to Bryant University, 3-2, in 2004 opener
POMONA
– Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team
was unable to open its 2004 season with a victory.
The Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second half
Thursday at Kellogg Field, but Bryant University stormed back
to tie the game and then won it less than four minutes into
overtime, 3-2. Lisa Bielenin scored a pair of goals for Bryant,
including the game-winner in overtime.
It was a disappointing opener for the Broncos, who had the
better scoring chances for most of the game and enjoyed a
shot advantage of 17-9. Bryant, though, got some outstanding
goaltending from Kim Rekart, who made five saves, most of
them spectacular, to keep her team in the contest.
The Broncos got goals from Kimberly Stillman (Fr., Arcadia,
Arcadia HS) and Jamie Black (Jr., Torrance, West HS) and four
saves from goalkeeper Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland
HS).
Stillman got the Broncos on the board just seven minutes into
the game when she knocked a corner kick from Chelsea Hipley
(Jr., Sacramento, Woodcreek HS) into the net past Rekart.
The Broncos made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half
when Black scored with an assist from Kristi Ibello (So.,
Santa Rosa, Ursuline HS).
Bryant, though, began to generate some offense and sliced
the deficit in half less than two minutes later when Bielenin
scored her first goal with an assist from Christi Kalukiewicz.
Kalukiewicz also assisted on the game-tying goal from Casey
Grange in the 76th minute. A nice pass from Kalukiewicz gave
Grange a breakaway opportunity and she made the most of it
by knocking a shot past an onrushing Richardson.
The Bulldogs then ended it quickly in overtime when Grange
assisted on Bielenin’s second goal, which came on a
shot in the box.
Cal Poly Pomona will now embark on a two-game road trip in
Washington. The Broncos will face Western Washington on Saturday
and Seattle Pacific on Monday.
