Head
Coach Jim Sackett enters his 25th year as the head coach of
Cal Poly Pomona’s Track and Field teams and this one
promises to be another exciting one.
After hosting the 2004 NCAA Division II national championships
at Mt. San Antonio College last May, the Broncos return an
experienced and talented group of student-athletes hoping
to make noise in this year's nationals, which will be held
in Abilene, TX.
Cal Poly Pomona has two track and field All-Americans returning,
one for the men and one for the women. Junior Mark Batres
earned All-America honors last year in the 10,000 meters and
is a two-time All-American in cross country. Carmen Franklin
earned All-America honors in the women's 800 last season after
showing remarkable improvement during the season.
Both have aspirations of reaching the nationals again this
season.
A third Bronco, senior Daniel Rojas, is coming off an All-America
season as well in cross country and will be one of the top
distance runners in the nation.
Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s team, which finished second
in the California Collegiate Athletic Association last season,
hopes to shrink the gap between the Broncos and favored Chico
State. The Broncos had three individual conference champions
last year and all three return this season.
Leading the list is Batres, who won the CCAA 10,000-meter
title and then went on to finish fifth in the country. Senior
Jason Johnson won the conference 1000-meter championship,
edging teammate and two-time defending champion Vince Nguyen
in the process. Both sprinters return for the Broncos. Johnson
qualified for the nationals and competed in the prelims.
Another Bronco, Sean Myrill, captured the conference title
in the 110 high hurdles and qualified for nationals. He competed
in the prelims.
The Cal Poly Pomona women finished sixth in the conference
last season and Sackett is hoping for another jump forward
this season. The Broncos have a talented squad and could be
battling for one of the conference's top three spots.
The versatile Franklin will lead the way. She captured the
CCAA 400-meter title last season and then finished sixth in
the nation in the 800 meters. She should be a top competitor
in both events again this season.
Cal Poly Pomona has a second qualifier from the 2004 nationals
back in junior Valerie Henderson. She qualified for the nationals
in the triple jump and finished 15th in the country. She is
also a top long jumper in the conference.
