Bonds Earns NABC All-America Accolades
Cal Poly Pomona also puts two on All-Region team

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Cal Poly Pomona’s Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II All-America team. Bonds becomes just the fifth Bronco in men’s basketball history to earn All-America honors and the first since Terry Ross in 1991.

Bonds was one of only two players in the West Region to earn All-America honors. Brad Oleson of Alaska Fairbanks was the other.

Bonds joins Bill Leedom (1963), Paul Scranton (1966), Gary Anderson (1972) and Ross (1991) as Bronco All-Americans.

The NABC All-Region teams were also announced this week and Bonds and David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) were both named to a six-player first team. It’s the second year in a row the duo has been honored on the NABC All-West Region team – Bonds was also a first-team choice last year, while Sybesma earned second-team honors.

Joining Bonds and Sybesma on the All-West Region first team were Oleson, Jason Chivers of Seattle Pacific, Osadonor Esene of Hawaii Hilo and Grant Dykstra of Western Washington.

Bonds led the Broncos in scoring and rebounding for a third straight year. He averages 17.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. He was named the 2005 NCAA Division II West Regional Most Outstanding Player after leading the Broncos into the Elite Eight for the second time in three years. Bonds was also the 2003 West Regional Most Outstanding Player.

Sybesma was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year after helping the Broncos earn a share of their first conference title since 1981. Sybesma was second on the Broncos in both scoring (16.2 per game) and rebounding (5.6 per game). He was named to the West Regional All-Tournament team for the second time in his career.

Bonds and Sybesma ended their Cal Poly Pomona careers Wednesday in the Elite Eight in Grand Forks, N.D. The Broncos, the 2005 NCAA Division II West Region champions, fell to South Central Region champion Tarleton State (TX), 58-56 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Cal Poly Pomona Falls In A Heartbreaker
West Region champions lose to Tarleton State, 58-56

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Cal Poly Pomona's men's basketball team came painfully close to its first-ever trip to a national semi-final game.

The Broncos couldn't hold a nine-point lead in the final 4:23 of the game and fell to NCAA Division II South Central Region champion Tarleton State, 58-56, Wednesday at the Ralph Englestad Arena. Cal Poly Pomona (24-7), the NCAA Division II West Region champs, was outscored, 13-2 down the stretch. The Broncos, making their second trip to the Elite Eight in the past three seasons, are now 0-3 in national quarterfinal games.

Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had 12 points to lead the Broncos, while David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) had 11 points. Kaelen Daniels (Fr., Compton, Artesia HS) had nine points and four rebounds.

LaShon Sheffield scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, while Nic Gamble had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Tarleton State had a huge edge on the boards, outrebounding the Broncos, 35-22. The Texans (25-8) also got hot from the field in the second half, connecting on 58 percent of their shots in the second half.

" Obviously, it was a disheartening game," Cal Poly Pomona Head Coach Greg Kamansky said. "We were right there; we had our chances. We have no one to blame but ourselves. That's not to take credit away from Tarleton. They made some big-time shots there at the end. Give credit to them."

It was stunning end to a sensational season for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona scored the final six points of the first half and took a 26-20 halftime lead. A free throw by Daniels, two free throws by Dion Cook (So., Canoga Park, Chaminade HS) and a 3-pointer by Boyd right before the buzzer gave the Broncos the six-point halftime lead.

Cal Poly Pomona then extended its lead to 10 points, 41-31, with 10:59 to go after a pair of free throws by Sybesma.

Sheffield, though, knocked down two consecutive 3-pointers to slice the lead down to four points, 41-37, with 8:53 and it was a dogfight the rest of the way.

The Broncos appeared to have quelled a Tarleton State run when Boyd knocked down a 3-pointer with 6:19 to go, giving Cal Poly Pomona a 50-43 lead. Boyd made two free throws and, after Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg HS) made two free throws, the Broncos held a 54-45 lead with 4:39 to go.

Tartleton State, though, then made its game-winning run.

The Texans quickly cut the lead to three points after a long 3-pointer by Cornell Jones made it 54-51, although a jumper by Daniels boosted the lead back to five points, 56-51, with 2:11 left.

That would be the last Bronco basket of the game. A 3-pointer by Sheffield made it 56-54 and, after a Cal Poly Pomona turnover, Sheffield assisted on a layup by David Stephens to tie the game.

Cook just missed a 3-pointer that would have given the Broncos back the lead with 21 seconds left and Sheffield hit a runner from about eight feet out to give Tarleton State the lead with 3.2 seconds left.

The Broncos quickly advanced the ball to the front court and called timeout with 2.1 seconds left. Sybesma got the inbound pass and dribbled inside the 3-point arc and passed to Boyd, but the buzzer sounded before a shot could be attempted.

The result ended the Cal Poly Pomona careers of Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) and Sybesma, who finished as the Broncos’ top two career scorers. Bonds, who was named to the WBCA All-America team earlier in the day, finished with five points and five rebounds. He completes his career with 1,777 points, while Sybesma finishes his career with 1,336.

Matt Nelsen (Sr., Santa Clarita, New Mexico Highlands) also concludes his one-year Bronco career.

Cal Poly Pomona Feeling Elite Again
No. 3 seed Broncos win NCAA West Region title

BELLINGHAM, WA - Cal Poly Pomona's men's basketball team is on top of the NCAA Division II West Region for the second time in the past three years.

The Broncos, who won the 2003 title in Hawaii, captured the 2005 title in Washington by beating Alaska Fairbanks, 65-58, Monday night at Haggen Court in Carver Gym on the campus of Western Washington. Cal Poly Pomona (24-6) will advance to the Elite Eight in Grand Forks, N.D. The Broncos will face the South Central champion on Wednesday, March 23. The game will be aired on the Cal Poly Pomona athletic website.

The Broncos got big games once again from their sensational senior pair of David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) and Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS). Sybesma had a game-high 21 points and three rebounds, while Bonds had 16 points and seven rebounds. Cal Poly Pomona, though, was hardly a two-man show. Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had 11 points and three rebounds one game after pouring in a career-high 28 points in the regional semifinal win over Hawaii Hilo. Kaelen Daniels (Fr., Compton, Artesia HS) had six points and six rebounds and did a fine job against a talented group of Alaska Fairbanks big men.

Bonds was named the regional tournament Most Valuable Player for the second time in three years, while Sybesma and Boyd joined him on the five-player all-tourney team. Oleson and Justin Bourne of Alaska Fairbanks rounded out the team.

Cal Poly Pomona played another spectacular defensive game as the Broncos held an Alaska Fairbanks team that had rung up 88 points against host Western Washington in the semi-finals to just 58 points on Monday. The Broncos did a magnificent job of holding the West Region's Player of the Year, Brad Oleson, to a hard-earned 14 points. He had led the region in scoring at more than 25 points a game coming into the tournament.

The Broncos came out on the short end of a 29-24 rebounding count, but forced 20 Alaska Fairbanks turnovers while committing only 13 of their own. Cal Poly Pomona had 11 steals, including three by Boyd and two each by Bonds and Billy Hofman (So., Sierra Madre, La Canada HS).

Cal Poly Pomona only made six baskets in the second half while shooting just 35 percent from the floor, but the Broncos hit 15 free throws in the second half, including seven of their last eight attempts in the final 52 seconds of the game.

The Broncos, as they did in all three of the regional games, jumped out to a sizeable lead in the first half. Cal Poly Pomona scored the last nine points of the first half and took a 36-25 lead at halftime. After a 3-pointer by Alaska Fairbanks' Chris Jordan cut the Bronco lead to 27-25, Boyd and Bonds hit 3-pointers, Daniels made a free throw and Sybesma hit a short jumper in the lane right before the buzzer to fuel the 9-0 run.

Cal Poly Pomona took its biggest lead of the game, 43-30, with 16:20 left after a 3-pointer by Sybesma, but Alaska Fairbanks steadily chipped away at the Bronco lead. Cal Poly Pomona endured a four-minute scoreless stretch and the Nanooks finally sliced the Bronco advantage to 53-52 with 3:45 to go.

Sybesma hit a pair of free throws to stop the Nanook run and two more free throws by Bonds after he was fouled grabbing an offensive rebounds made it 57-52 with 1:57 to go. Daniels was then fouled after grabbing a rebound of a missed 3-pointer by Andrew Smith and made one of two free throws.

Oleson made a tough 3-pointer to cut the Bronco lead to 58-55 with one minute left, but Sybesma was fouled and made two free throws with 52 seconds left to boost the lead to 60-55.

Bonds rebounded another Alaska Fairbanks miss, was fouled, and made one free throw to make it 61-55 with 24 seconds left, and, after Sybesma rebounded a missed 3-pointer by Oleson, he was fouled and made two free throws to boost the edge to 63-55 with 14 seconds to go, wrapping up the trip to North Dakota.

Cal Poly Pomona, after a 1-3 start, has won 23 of its last 26 games.

Cal Poly Pomona Aiming For An Elite Experience
No. 3 seed Broncos to play for second regional title in three years

BELLINGHAM, WA – Cal Poly Pomona's men's basketball team will be trying to achieve its second Elite experience in three years tonight.

The Broncos, the 2003 NCAA Division II West Region champs, will shoot for their second regional championship in the past three years when they face Alaska Fairbanks at 7 p.m. Monday in the regional title game at Western Washington University. The game will be aired on the Cal Poly Pomona athletic website with a pregame show at 6:50 p.m.

Cal Poly Pomona is making its third straight playoff appearance for the first time in the program’s history.

The winner of Monday's game advances to the Elite Eight, which begins on Wednesday, March 23 in Grand Forks, N.D.

The No. 3 seed Broncos (23-6) defeated No. 2 Hawaii Hilo on Saturday night, 73-62, behind a career-high 28 points from guard Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) and a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double from Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS). No. 5 Alaska Fairbanks ousted No. 1 seed and tournament host Western Washington on Saturday, 88-66, behind 28 points from senior guard Brad Oleson.

Cal Poly Pomona opened the tournament with an 82-77 win over No. 6 Seattle Pacific, while Alaska Fairbanks knocked off No. 4 seed Cal State San Bernardino, 65-59.

The Broncos own a 4-1 career advantage over Alaska Fairbanks, including an 80-76 win over the Nanooks in the first round of the 2003 NCAA playoffs.

The game will feature a pair of conference Players of the Year. Oleson, the Daktronics West Region Player of the Year, was named as the Player of the Year in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. He entered the tournament as the region’s leading scorer at 25.1 points per game. Cal Poly Pomona's David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year.

Bonds was named to the Daktronics West Region first-team, while Sybesma was a second-team selection.

The game also matches a pair of conference co-champions. Cal Poly Pomona shared the CCAA crown with Cal State San Bernardino, while Alaska Fairbanks tied for the GNAC title with Western Washington.

The Nanooks (21-8) comes into the game after a dominating performance against the tournament hosts. Alaska Fairbanks raced out to a 45-24 halftime lead over Western Washington and held double-digit leads throughout the second half.

Alaska Fairbanks, after losing in the first round of the tournament in 2003, advanced to the regional championship game last season in San Bernardino after beating the host Coyotes in overtime in the semi-finals. Three starters and seven players in all return from last year’s 23-7.
Cal Poly Pomona, meanwhile, has won five of its last six postseason games with the only loss coming last year in the first round against eventual regional champion Humboldt State, 86-83.

BELLINGHAM, WA -- Cal Poly Pomona's men's basketball team is one step away from its second NCAA Division II West Region championship in three years.

The Broncos, the 2003 NCAA Division II West Region champs, defeated Hawaii Hilo, 73-62, Saturday night at Western Washington's Haggen Court to advance to the regional championship game at 7 p.m. Monday night against No. 5 seed Alaska Fairbanks. The game will be aired on the Cal Poly Pomona athletic website with a pregame show set to begin at 6:50 p.m.

No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona (23-6) is making its third straight playoff appearance for the first time in the program's history.

Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) poured in a career-high 28 points to lead the Broncos, while Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS), the 2004-05 CCAA Player of the Year, finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Broncos, much like they did in a first-round victory over Seattle Pacific on Friday, took control with a big early run in the second half. Cal Poly Pomona led by 17 points with 11:01 remaining and held off a late Hawaii Hilo rally.

Cal Poly Pomona advanced despite being on the short end of the rebounding count, 43-32, and missing 10 free throws, eight of them in the second half. Boyd, though, made some key free throws late in the game to secure the victory. He was a perfect 10-for-10 from the line.

It was Boyd's long-range shooting that put the Broncos ahead in the first place. Boyd knocked down four 3-pointers in the first half to help Cal Poly Pomona take a 32-26 halftime lead. Hawaii-Hilo led by three points early, 10-7, but the Broncos got a game-tying 3-pointer by Bonds and a layup by Kaelen Daniels (Fr., Compton, Artesia HS) to take the lead for good at 12-10.

With Boyd hot from the outside, the Broncos led by as many as nine points in the first half before settling for the 32-26 edge.

The Broncos took advantage of back-to-back technical fouls by Hawaii Hilo with 18:21 to go and built a 41-28 lead after four straight free throws by Boyd.

The lead ballooned to 17 points after two free throws by Sybesma with 11:01 to go.

Hawaii-Hilo (25-4) put together a strong run and got to within five points, 61-56,with 1:08 left after a 3-pointer by Alex Cabagnot.

Four straight free throws -- two by Bonds and two by Boyd -- boosted the lead back to nine points and the Vulcans never got closer than five points in the final minute of play.

Cal Poly Pomona will have a basketball program in a regional championship game for the sixth straight year. The Bronco women made it in 2000-02, the Bronco men made it in 2003 and the Bronco women made it again in 2004.

The Broncos, playing in the first of 32 first-round games in the NCAA Division II playoffs, raced to a 20-point second-half lead and held off Seattle Pacific, 82-77, Friday afternoon in Western Washington’s Haggen Court. Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) had 24 points and nine rebounds to lead the Broncos, while David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) had 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg HS) had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Cal Poly Pomona (22-6) won for the 21st time in its last 24 games.

The No. 3 seed Broncos shot 58.7 percent for the game and a sizzling 60.9 percent in the second half. Seattle Pacific, the No. 6 seed, shot 50.8 percent for the game and made a strong run at the Broncos late in the game.

Cal Poly Pomona did a magnificent job at the free-throw line, knocking down 21 of 23 attempts. Seattle Pacific had only five attempts and made all five.

The Broncos had firm control of the game for most of the contest, but Seattle Pacific was able to make a late run to cause a few anxious moments late in the contest.

Malone II hit four 3-pointers in the first half to help the Broncos take a 41-29 halftime lead. The Falcons hit a 3-pointer to open the game and had a 9-6 lead before back-to-back 3-pointers by Malone II gave the Broncos the lead for good.

Sybesma and Bonds took over early in the second half and the Broncos, running an efficient offense, carved up the Seattle Pacific defense. Cal Poly Pomona made nine of its first 12 attempts in the second half and the Broncos grabbed a 61-41 lead with 11:31 to go after a jumper by Billy Hofman (So., Sierra Madre, La Canada HS).

Seattle Pacific, though, made a strong run and got to within five points, 71-66, with 1:57 remaining after a layup by Tony Binetti. Two free throws by Sybesma and a dunk by Dion Cook (So., Canoga Park, Chaminade HS) boosted the lead back up to nine points with 1:18 to go, but a 3-pointer by Seattle Pacific’s Dustin Bremerman got the Falcons back to within 75-69 with 1:02 left.

A free throw by Bonds and a defensive rebound by Bonds set up a beautiful pass from Malone to a driving Bonds for a slam dunk that gave the Broncos a 78-69 lead. Bremerman hit another 3-pointer, but Malone countered with a layup off an assist from Cook to put the game out of reach, 80-72, with 12 seconds to go.

Cook finished with nine points and four rebounds, while Hofman had eight points and a career-high eight assists. Kaelen Daniels (Fr., Compton, Artesia HS) had six points and two rebounds.

Cal Poly Pomona Takes Top CCAA Honors
Sybesma named Player of the Year; Kamansky Coach of the Year

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Cal Poly Pomona's men's basketball program took top honors Thursday when the California Collegiate Athletic Association announced its All-Conference teams.

Cal Poly Pomona's David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) was named the CCAA Player of the Year, while Cal Poly Pomona Head Coach Greg Kamansky was named the CCAA Coach of the Year. The Broncos shared the CCAA championship with Cal State San Bernardino, earning a piece of the conference title for the first time since 1981.

Joining Sybesma on the All-CCAA first team was teammate Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS), who earned first-team recognition for the third straight year. A third Bronco, Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg HS) was named to the All-CCAA second team.

Sybesma becomes the first men's basketball player since Terry Ross in 1991 to earn CCAA Player of the Year honors. The program's No. 2 all-time leading scorer, Sybesma led the team and was second in the CCAA in scoring in conference games only with a 16.6 points per game. He is second on the team in overall scoring at 16.3 points per game.

This is Sybesma's third All-CCAA honor. He earned first-team honors as well last season and got second-team recognition in 2003.

Bonds, meanwhile, becomes the first player in the program’s history to earn first-team All-CCAA honors three straight years. He leads the Broncos in scoring (17.3 points per game) and rebounding (6.3 per game) for a third straight season.

Malone II is enjoying his best season with the Broncos and earned All-CCAA honors for the first time in his career. He is averaging 8.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per game and has been one of the Broncos’ most tenacious defenders this season.

Kamansky, in his fifth season as the Broncos' head coach, has a 100-39 overall record and has guided Cal Poly Pomona into the playoffs for a third straight season. Cal Poly Pomona has won 20 or more games for the past three seasons, the first time in the program's history it has accomplished that feat. His winning percentage of .719 is the best in the program’s history.

He led the Broncos to the 2003 NCAA Division II West Region championship in 2003 and just led the Broncos to their first CCAA championship in 24 years.

This is the second major award in as many days for the Broncos. On Wednesday, Bonds was named to the 2004-05 Daktronics All-West Region first team, while Sybesma was named to the second team.

Broncos Receive Playoff Assignments
Cal Poly Pomona men headed to Western Washington; men to Western Washington

POMONA -- For the second straight year, Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will both be competing in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Cal Poly Pomona men, making a third straight playoff appearance for the first time in the program’s history, drew the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Seattle Pacific in a first-round game on Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Western Washington. The Broncos (21-6) are the California Collegiate Athletic Association co-champions and have earned their first CCAA title since 1981.

The Bronco women, meanwhile, the most successful program in the NCAA Division II, drew the No. 6 seed and will face CCAA champion Chico State in a first-round game on Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Seattle Pacific, which is hosting the regional tournament for the third straight year. Cal Poly Pomona (20-7) finished second in the conference this year, one game behind Chico State. The Broncos have won five national titles, which is tied for the most in Division II and have won a Division II record 48 postseason games. Cal Poly Pomona will be making its 20th NCAA postseason appearance.

This is only the second time since the Cal Poly Pomona men’s and women’s teams have been competing in the NCAA Division II that both programs have received postseason bids in the same season.

Cal Poly Pomona’s men have rebounded strongly after starting the season with a 1-3 record that included season-opening losses to tournament host Western Washington and St. Martin’s and a home defeat to conference foe Sonoma State. The Broncos, though, won 20 of their next 23 games and earned a conference co-title for the first time in 24 years. Cal Poly Pomona’s last CCAA championship came in 1981 when the Broncos shared the crown with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

The Broncos have been led by the program’s top-two all-time leading scorers, Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) and David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS). Both were first-team All-CCAA selections last season and earned all-region honors as well.

The women, meanwhile, overcame a severe shoulder injury to the nation’s leading scorer, Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario, University of Arizona) late in the season and will making their eight appearance in the last nine years. Cal Poly Pomona has reached the Sweet Sixteen in four of the past five seasons, which is more than any other Division II program. Allen who did play in the Broncos’ final three games, leads the nation in scoring with 28.3 points per game.

Broncos Finish Regular Season With Win
Cal Poly Pomona’s men basketball team beats CS Monterey Bay, 79-66

POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team finished its regular season with a victory and now will set its sights on San Francisco to see if a first California Collegiate Athletic Association title since 1981 will become a reality.

The Broncos pulled away late for a 79-66 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night to finish their regular season with a 21-6 record and a 16-4 mark in the CCAA. The Broncos are one-half game behind first-place Cal State San Bernardino, which can put the finishing touches on its sixth straight conference title with a win Saturday night at San Francisco State. A win by the Gators would give the Broncos a share of the conference title.

Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) led the Broncos with 19 points and six rebounds, while David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) had 16 points, three rebounds and two assists. Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had 10 points.

Devoughn Lamont and Azzan Walker led four Otters in double figures with 14 points. Jared Jungwirth had 12 points, while Will Brown had 10 points and five rebounds for Cal State Monterey Bay (12-14, 9-10), which is a first-year CCAA member.

The Broncos had their hands full with the Otters for most of the evening. Cal Poly Pomona raced out to a 23-10 lead in the first nine minutes of the game, but the Otters battled back and sliced the lead to 38-31 at halftime. The Otters continued their surge in the second half and cut the deficit to 45-41 with 15:43 left.

That was as close as Cal State Monterey Bay would get, although the Otters were still within striking distance at 66-59 with 4:06 remaining. Two short jumpers by Sybesma and Bonds on back-to-back possessions stretched the lead to 11 points, 70-59, and the Broncos were not threatened after that.

Cal Poly Pomona shot 57 percent for the game, while Cal State Monterey Bay shot 51 percent. The Otters owned a 33-24 rebounding edge.

Billy Hofman (So., Sierra Madre, La Canada HS) and Kaelen Daniels (Fr., Compton, Artesia HS) had nine points each for the Broncos.

Cal Poly Pomona will now wait until Sunday night to find out the NCAA Division II playoff pairings. The Broncos will be making their third playoff appearance in a row.

Broncos Get Back On Winning Track

Broncos Lose Heartbreaker In Bakersfield
Cal Poly Pomona falls to Roadrunners, 73-71

BAKERSFIELD -- A late rally by the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team fell agonizingly short Saturday night against California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Cal State Bakersfield.

The Broncos battled nearly all the way back from an 11-point deficit in the final 2:47, but saw a pair of golden opportunities slip away late in a 73-71 loss to Cal State Bakersfield Saturday night in Centennial Garden. Cal Poly Pomona (7-4, 2-2) had a six-game winning streak snapped by the Roadrunners (8-3, 3-1).

Cal State Bakersfield appeared to have the game in hand when a tip-in by Rob Turnbull gave the Roadrunners a 70-59 lead with 2:47 to go. But the Broncos made a furious rally and cut the lead to two points, 72-70, with 17 seconds left. The Broncos then got the ball back after a Cal State Bakersfield turnover and Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) made one of two free throws to make it 72-71 with five seconds remaining. The Broncos forced another quick turnover with four seconds left, but an inbounds pass by Cal Poly Pomona went awry and the Roadrunners got possession with two ticks remaining. Andre Hardwick was fouled and made one of two free throws with 0.2 seconds remaining to account for the final margin.

David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) had a sensational game for the Broncos, tying a career high with 27 points, 22 of them in the second half. He also had seven rebounds and was instrumental in the Broncos’ late rally. Bonds finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. Dion Cook (So., Canoga Park, Chaminade HS) had nine points and four assists.

Eddie Shelby had 23 points for the Roadrunners, while Michael Schnyder had 19 points and Jon Bell contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Broncos shot 50 percent for the game and knocked down nine 3-pointers. Cal State Bakersfield, though, made 56.4 percent of its shots and held a slim 31-30 rebounding edge. The Broncos made 10 of 14 free-throw attempts, which was significantly better than Cal State Bakersfield’s 5-of-17 effort at the line.

Cal State Bakersfield led for nearly the entire first half, but never by more than six points. Cal Poly Pomona led by three points early, 11-8, after a 3-pointer by Cook and led by one as late as 26-25 after a layup by Bonds.

The Roadrunners, though, closed out the half with a 11-5 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Schnyder with one second remaining, to take a 36-31 halftime lead.

Cal State Bakersfield started the second half quickly and built its advantage to 10 points, 42-32, after another 3-pointer by Schnyder. Cal Poly Pomona rallied for the first time and trimmed the lead to one point, 53-52, after a basket by Kaelen Daniels (Fr., Compton, Artesia HS) with 11:22 remaining.

The Roadrunners, though, opened the lead back up to 10 points, 66-56, with 4:59 left and took their biggest lead, 70-59, with 2:47 to go.

A 3-pointer by Sybesma started the Broncos’ rally and, following a missed Cal State Bakersfield free throw in the front end of a 1-and-1 situation, Sybesma converted a three-point play to cut the deficit to 70-65 with 1:35 remaining. After a turnover by the Roadrunners, Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) knocked down a 3-pointer and the Broncos trailed by only two, 70-68, with 1:06 left. Shelby made a tough shot to extend the Roadrunner lead to 72-68, with 35 seconds left, but Sybesma scored again with 17 seconds remaining to make it 72-70.

The Broncos got the ball back after a turnover and Bonds rebounded his own miss and was fouled with five seconds to go. Bonds missed the first attempt, made the second, and the Broncos trailed by one. That set the stage for the final heartbreak when, after the Broncos got the ball back again thanks to another Roadrunner turnover, a bounce pass from Billy Hofman (So., Sierra Madre, La Canada HS) toward Bonds was knocked off of Bonds’ leg and out of bounds.

Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg HS) had six points on a pair of 3-pointers for the Broncos, while Hofman and Boyd both had three points thanks to 3-point shots. Daniels had four points and four rebounds in 14 minutes for the Broncos.
