Under
the steady leadership of Greg Kamansky, the Cal Poly Pomona
men’s basketball program is enjoying its best run ever.
Kamansky,
who is entering his fifth year as the Bronco head coach, has
guided the Broncos into the NCAA Division II playoffs in back-to-back
years for the first time in the program’s history and
also led the team to more than 20 wins in consecutive seasons
for the first time. The highlight of his tenure was an NCAA
Division II West Region championship in 2003.
In his
first four seasons as head coach, Kamansky has compiled a
79-33 record. His winning percentage of .705 is the best in
the program’s history. In the past two seasons, the
Broncos are 44-14 and have a winning percentage of .759.
Kamansky
led the Broncos to a 21-7 record in 2003-04 and into the NCAA
Division II playoffs for a second straight season. Cal Poly
Pomona, which finished third in the California Collegiate
Athletic Association last season, entered the playoffs as
the region’s sixth-seeded team and lost a heartbreaking
86-83 decision to eventual regional champion Humboldt State
in a first-round matchup. While finishing third in the competitive
CCAA, the Broncos set a new program standard for conference
wins in a season with 17.
In 2002-03,
Kamansky guided the Broncos to the West Region championship
and into the national quarterfinals for the first time since
1964. The Broncos concluded the season with a 23-7 record,
which equaled the program record for most wins in a season
set by the 1963-64 team. Cal Poly Pomona finished second in
the CCAA with a 16-6 mark, which was the best finish in the
CCAA since the conference was expanded six years ago. The
Broncos, seeded fourth in the West Regional, knocked off No.
5 Alaska Fairbanks, No. 8 Cal State Bakersfield and No. 2
Cal State San Bernardino to advance to the Elite Eight.
Kamansky
led the Broncos to an 18-9 record in 2001-02, which was the
best mark since the 1980-81 season. The Broncos finished third
in the CCAA with a 15-7 mark and just missed qualifying for
the NCAA playoffs.
In his
first season as head coach, Kamansky guided a team picked
to finish ninth in the conference to a 17-10 record and the
brink of the program’s first NCAA Division II playoff
berth since 1976. The 17-10 record was the best mark for a
first-year coach in the program’s history.
Kamansky
became the 10th head coach in the program’s history
following the departure of Tim Rapp before the 2000-01 season.
He had been an assistant coach with the Broncos for two seasons.
In Kamansky’s final season as the top assistant coach,
the Broncos had their best season in 20 years and finished
the season ranked in the Top 10 in the West Region. Cal Poly
Pomona was hit heavily by graduation following that season,
but Kamansky was able to maintain the momentum and keep the
Broncos among the elite programs in the region.
The Broncos
have now posted 10 consecutive winning seasons, which is the
best run in the program’s history.
Kamansky
is a firm believer in teaching his players to succeed both
on and off the court. His teams have been known for their
hustle and intensity on the court and the players are just
as well known for their contributions to the campus and community
off the court. The Bronco program strives to build character
in its players and encourages its players to be active in
community service. The program also takes pride in its academic
achievement. The Broncos have recorded four of the highest
GPAs in the program’s history under Kamansky’s
watch.
Before
coming to Cal Poly Pomona, Kamansky was an assistant men’s
coach and assistant athletic director at Fresno Pacific from
1993-98, working in every aspect of the Sunbirds’ basketball
program. His responsibilities included on-court coaching,
game preparation and strategy as well as recruiting and scouting.
His administrative duties included event operations and promotions.
Prior
to his stint at Fresno Pacific, Kamansky was an assistant
coach at UC San Diego from 1988-90 and he also worked in administrative
roles from 1990-93 at the University of San Diego. He was
a four-year letterman at UC San Diego and earned NCAA Division
III All-America honorable mention recognition in 1987. He
earned all-region honors twice. Kamansky completed his playing
career as the school’s second-leading all-time scorer
and earned his bachelor’s degree in management science
from UC San Diego in 1988. He earned his Master’s degree
in business administration from San Diego State in 1993.
Kamansky
has long ties to the area. His grandfather, Joe, attended
Chaffey College and was a San Bernardino County supervisor.
His father, Jerry, attended Chaffey High School. Greg Kamansky
attended Arcadia High School.
Kamansky
lives with his wife, Anne, and their four children: Taylor
(9), Joseph (6), Zachary (4) and newest addition Kylee, who
was born in April.
