MEN’S BASKETBALL: BRONCOS  RESUME ACTION ON TUESDAY

2004-05 Record: 2-3. 2004-05 CCAA Record: 1-1

BRONCOS TO PLAY IN TWO BIG REGIONAL MATCHUPS: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team, which has been idle since splitting its first two California Collegiate Athletic Association contests on Dec. 3 and 4, will resume action this week with a pair of important NCAA Division II West Region contests. The Broncos, who are 2-3 overall and 1-1 in CCAA play, will host Seattle University on Tuesday night in Kellogg Gym and then meet former CCAA rival Grand Canyon on Saturday in Phoenix, Ariz. The Broncos have been led thus far by new Cal Poly Pomona scoring leader Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) and 2004 first-team All-CCAA forward David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS). Bonds, who became the Broncos’ all-time leading scorer earlier this season, is averaging 18.6 points per game and 5.6 rebounds. He poured in a season-high 26 points earlier in the season against Western Washington in a game where he surpassed Lucas LeCour’s career scoring mark at Cal Poly Pomona. Bonds now has 1,341 points in his career. Sybesma, meanwhile, is second on the team in scoring with a 16.6 points per game average and also second in rebounding with 5.2 boards per game. He has climbed to ninth on the all-time scoring list with 969 points in his Bronco career. Dion Cook (So., Canoga Park, Chaminade HS) is third on the team in scoring at 9.0 per game and Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg HS) is averaging 8.6 points per game and leads the team with eight 3-pointers.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: BRONCOS REMAIN UNBEATEN WITH TOURNEY WINS

2004-05 Record: 6-0. 2004-05 CCAA Record: 4-0

2004-05 National Ranking: 16

BRONCOS WIN TWICE IN TOURNEY AT CS BAKERSFIELD: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team, which is now ranked 16th in the nation in the Division II WBCA/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, remained unbeaten in the 2004-05 season with a pair of wins in the Classic Western Shootout at Cal State Bakersfield. The Broncos received a record-breaking performance from tournament Most Valuable Player Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario, University of Arizona), who poured in a school-record 50 points to lead the Broncos past Glenville State on Saturday night. The 50 points also set a new California Collegiate Athletic Association record and a new Icardo Center mark. The Broncos opened tourney play with a hard-fought 84-76 victory over Northwest Nazarene. The Broncos took the lead for good with 5:22 to go on a 3-pointer by Shanika Perkins (Jr., Oakland, Oakland HS) and finished the game on a 17-7 run over the final six minutes of the game. Allen scored 26 of her game-high 32 points in the second half to lead the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona trailed by eight points, 63-55, with 10:17 remaining in the game. The Broncos were on the short end of a 41-32 count in rebounds, but forced 33 Northwest Nazarene turnovers. Lauren Stayton (Jr., Inglewood, Fresno State) had 15 points, Perkins finished with 12 points and Natasha Reed (Fr., San Francisco, Deer Valley HS) had 10 points and seven rebounds. The Broncos then finished play in the tournament with a come-from-behind 81-75 win over No. 9 Glenville State. Cal Poly Pomona rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final 10:31 of the game and got the record-breaking night from Allen in the process. Allen scored 23 points in the first half while keeping the Broncos in the game and she added 27 in the second half as Glenville State had no one to stop the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year. Allen also led the team with nine rebounds. Glenville State, which lost to the Broncos in the national semi-finals in 2002, led by as many as nine points in the first half, although the Broncos closed the first half on a 15-6 run to knot things up, 37-37, at halftime. Glenville State then opened up an eight-point lead in the second half, but the Broncos quickly responded with a 6-0 run to set the stage for an exciting finish. The Pioneers led, 73-69, with 3:04 to go, but layups by Allen and Brandi Fletcher (Jr., Pomona, Diamond Ranch HS) tied the game at 73-73. The game was tied for a final time at 75-75, with 58 seconds to go, but two free throws by Allen with 42 seconds left put the Broncos ahead for good. After a key defensive stop, Allen hit two free throws with 14 seconds to go to put the game away. Stayton completed the win with two free throws with four seconds left. The Broncos, after losing the rebounding battle on Friday, held a 42-32 edge on Saturday, including a 13-rebound margin in the second half when the game was decided.

ALLEN NAMED CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario, University of Arizona), the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year, was named the Wilson CCAA Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 29 – Dec. 5. Allen led the Broncos to a pair of conference victories that week over Sonoma State and San Francisco State. Allen had 30 points to lead the Broncos to a 104-85 win over Sonoma State on Dec. 3 and then had 31 points and six rebounds in a 93-61 over San Francisco State on Dec. 4. For the week, Allen averaged 30.5 points per game on 57.5 percent shooting. Allen, who led the nation in scoring last year with 24.5 points per game, is averaging 33.2 points per game in the first six games of the 2004-05 season and connecting on 53.3 percent of her shots from the floor.

BRONCOS TO HOST GRAND CANYON IN KEY REGIONAL CONTEST: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team, ranked 16th in the NCAA Division II, will host Grand Canyon in another key NCAA Division II West Region contest Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly Pomona will then be off until two key regional matchups against perennial powers Western Washington and Seattle Pacific in the CCAA/GNAC Classic in Seattle on Dec. 29-30.
