MEN’S BASKETBALL: BRONCOS SPLIT FIRST TWO CONFERENCE GAMES

2004-05 Record: 2-3. 2004-05 CCAA Record: 1-1

BRONCOS LOSE IN OPENER, BOUNCE BACK AGAINST GATORS: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team split its first two California Collegiate Athletic Association contests last weekend in Kellogg Gym. The Broncos opened conference play with a disappointing 64-61 loss to Sonoma State on Friday night. The loss snapped a 12-game home winning streak dating back to last season. Dion Cook (So., Canoga Park, Chaminade HS) led the Broncos with 14 points, while Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) had 12 points and Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg HS) had 11 points and four rebounds. The Broncos held a 31-29 rebounding edge, but cost themselves at the free-throw line, where they made only 13 of 23 free-throw attempts.  The game was tied at 58-58, after a free throw by David Sybesma (Jr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS), but Sonoma State scored the next six points to take a 64-58 lead with just 28 seconds remaining. Cook then nailed a 3-pointer to make it 64-61 and Malone made a quick steal, giving the Broncos the ball back with eight seconds left. After a Bronco timeout, Sybesma got a good look at a potential game-tying 3-pointer, but it bounced off the rim and into a crowd of players as the buzzer went off. The Broncos then snapped a three-game losing streak with a 70-62 win over San Francisco State on Saturday night. Sybesma poured in a season-high 26 points and made nine of his 13 field-goal attempts to lead the way, while Bonds added 12 points and three rebounds in just 22 minutes. Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had 11 points and a team-high five rebounds. Cal Poly Pomona led for most of the game and only trailed once, 4-3. The Broncos went on a 20-5 run and opened up a 24-8 lead midway through the opening half. San Francisco State, though, cut the deficit to just seven points late in the first half, only to see the Broncos build the advantage back to 12 points, 38-26, by halftime. The Broncos led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but San Francisco State steadily chipped away and got to within five points, 48-43 and again at 53-48 with 9:58 remaining. Two free throws by Boyd and an inside bucket by Bonds boosted the lead back to nine points and the Broncos led by at least six points the rest of the way.

BONDS NAMED CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS), who became Cal Poly Pomona’s all-time leading scorer in the opening week of the season, was named the Wilson California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 22-28. Bonds scored 69 points in the three games that week and moved to 1,317 points in his Cal Poly Pomona career, which surpassed the old mark of 1,302 held by Lucas LeCour. Bonds averaged 23.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He had 20 points to lead the Broncos past Vanguard, 85-61, he had 23 points and 14 rebounds in a loss to Saint Martin’s and he had 26 points in a loss to Western Washington. Bonds has been a Preseason All-American the past two years in Street & Smith’s preseason publication and he earned first-team All-West Region and All-CCAA honors last season.
