The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA playoffs. The Broncos have four matches remaining in the regular season, two of them at home: Wednesday, Nov. 10 against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Friday, Nov. 12 against Grand Canyon.

MEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS CONCLUDE REGULAR SEASON WITH BUSY WEEK

2004 Overall Record: 7-11-1. 2004 CCAA Record: 5-8-1.

BRONCOS BEAT UC SAN DIEGO, THEN DROP FINAL TWO MATCHES: The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team had an extraordinarily difficult final week of play in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, playing three of the four teams that have qualified for the CCAA Championship Tournament in a span of just six days. The Broncos posted a thrilling 3-2 double overtime victory over UC San Diego on Monday and then lost matches to perennial powers Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Broncos rallied for their victory over UC San Diego on Monday in La Jolla and avenged an early-season 6-1 loss to the Tritons at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona got a pair of goals from Dustin Venegas (Fr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) in the final 20 minutes of regulation to get the game into overtime. First, Venegas had a steal and a quick goal to slice the Tritons’ lead to 2-1 and he scored the game-tying goal with 3:43 left in regulation with an assist from Kory Felix (Sr., Brea, Brea-Olinda HS). The game-winner was scored by Ben Van der Fluit (Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS) with 4:11 left in the second overtime period. Van der Fluit’s goal came with an assist from Joe DeVito (Sr., Walnut Creek, De La Salle HS). Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) made eight saves in goal for the Broncos. The Broncos then dropped a hard-fought 3-0 decision to Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday. The Broncos trailed by only one, 1-0, before the Roadrunners got some breathing room with a penalty kick in the 68th minute. Cal State Bakersfield scored its final goal in the last eight minutes of the game. Coombs had three saves for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona concluded its season with a 3-1 loss to CCAA South Division champion Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at Kellogg Field. The Broncos honored seven players who finished their soccer careers at Cal Poly Pomona: Gabriel Ward (Sr., Chino Hills, Damien HS), Peter Wallace (Sr., San Martin, De Anza JC), Joe DeVito (Sr., Walnut Creek, De La Salle HS), Andrew Bornstein (Sr., Los Alamitos, Long Beach CC), Robert Cardenas (Sr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College), Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) and Kory Felix (Sr., Brea, Brea-Olinda HS). The Broncos got their lone goal from Wallace, who scored his third goal of the season. Vic Perkins (Fr., Palmdale, Highland HS) passed the ball to Bornstein, who set Wallace up in the middle of the penalty area and he drilled a shot into the net. Ward and Coombs combined to make five saves for the Broncos in goal.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS REACH CCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY AGAIN

2004 Overall Record: 9-6-4. 2004 CCAA Record: 8-2-4

BRONCOS FINISH REGULAR SEASON WITH A LENGTHY UNBEATEN STRING: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team wrapped up a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament for a record seventh straight season. The Broncos recorded wins over UC San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield and a tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills last week and finished the regular season with a six-match unbeaten streak. The Broncos finished with 28 points in the conference, which guaranteed them no worse than the No. 1 wildcard spot. Cal Poly Pomona is tied with UC San Diego for the South Division lead, but the Tritons have a makeup game scheduled for Monday night. The Broncos opened the week with a thrilling 4-3 win at UC San Diego, scoring the most goals they’ve scored against a Triton team since 1990. Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr., San Diego, U. of San Diego HS) and Erica Rodriguez (Jr., San Diego, Bonita Vista HS) scored two goals each. Rodriguez scored the game-winner with 7:54 left in regulation. Ragudos opened the scoring with a goal in the 24th minute. Chelsea Hipley (Jr., Sacramento, Woodcreek HS) had the assist. After UC San Diego took a 2-1 lead early in the second half, Rodriguez scored with an assist from Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) to tie the game in the 58th minute. Ragudos then gave the Broncos a 3-2 lead by scoring with assists from Jamie Venegas (Jr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) and Mary Real (Jr., Upland, Mt. San Antonio College). After the Tritons tied the game again at 3-3, Rodriguez got to a loose ball in the middle of the field and blasted home the game-winner. Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) made three saves for the Broncos. The Broncos then clinched a spot in the CCAA tourney with a 1-0 win at Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday. Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game just 23 seconds into the second half, taking a pass from Sara Flowers (Fr., Santee, Santana HS) and heading the ball into the net. Richardson made three saves for the Broncos to post her fifth shutout. The Broncos then rallied from a 2-0 deficit in their regular-season finale on Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills and earned a 2-2 tie. Two long throw-ins by Stephanie Mrazik (Fr., Brea, Brea-Olinda HS) set up both Cal Poly Pomona goals in the second half. The first one was batted around by both teams before Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS) got off a shot that went through traffic and into the goal. The second throw-in found Ragudos in front of the net and she knocked a shot into the goal. Richardson made two saves for the Broncos, who enjoyed a 15-8 edge in shots. Before the game, the Broncos honored six players who are concluding their soccer careers at Cal Poly Pomona: Jillian Burdwell (Sr., Ontario, Upland HS), Nicole Munoz (Sr., Claremont, Mt. San Antonio College), Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS), Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS), Kristin Ramaglia (Sr., San Diego, Cal State San Bernardino) and Rocio Real (Sr., Upland, Mt. San Antonio College).

BRONCOS SET FOR CCAA TOURNEY, HAVE EYE ON POSSIBLE NCAA BID: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team will participate in its record seventh California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament this week at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Broncos will play at 11 a.m. on Friday against either North Division champion Chico State or UC San Diego. If the Tritons win today against Cal State San Bernardino, the Broncos will face Chico State. If the Tritons lose or tie, the Broncos will face UC San Diego. The winner of Friday’s semifinals will meet for the conference title on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

The Broncos are also eying a possible bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs. Cal Poly Pomona was ranked eighth in the latest NCAA poll, but that was before victories over No. 2 UC San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield and a tie against No. 4 Cal State Dominguez Hills. The top four teams in the region will advance.

CROSS COUNTRY: BRONCOS HEAD TO WASHINGTON FOR REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

CAL POLY POMONA MEN RANKD SECOND; WOMEN ARE NINTH: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Western Washington this Saturday. The top three teams on both the men’s and women’s sides will qualify for the NCAA Division II championships. The Bronco men, after finishing second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association are ranked second in the region heading into the meet, while the women, who finished fourth in the conference, are ranked ninth. Daniel Rojas (Sr., El Monte, Mt. San Antonio College), the CCAA champion, and Mark Batres (Jr., Rowland Heights, Don Bosco Tech HS) are two of the favorites to win the regional individual title. Rojas was second in the region last year, while Batres was third.
