VOLLEYBALL: BRONCOS COMPLETE SWEEPS OF TWO CCAA POWERS

2004 Overall Record: 14-9. 2004 CCAA Record: 9-4

BRONCOS BEAT ROADRUNNERS, GOLDEN EAGLES IN DARLENE MAY GYM: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team completed season sweeps over traditional California Collegiate Athletic Association powers Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State L.A. The Broncos swept both programs in conference matches for the first time since 1985. The Broncos maintained their grip on third place in the conference and solidified their position as one of the top teams in the Pacific Region. Cal Poly Pomona opened the weekend with a 30-28, 30-25, 19-30, 30-25 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Friday night. Allison Anderson (Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) had 19 kills and two blocks for the Broncos, while Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino, Don Lugo HS) added 14 kills and 15 digs and Christina Gordon (Jr., Moreno Valley, Riverside CC) had 11 kills and eight digs. Antoinette Kathol (Fr., Sierra Madre, La Salle HS) also had a strong match and contributed nine kills and nine blocks. The Broncos jumped out quickly by winning the first two games, including a tight first frame. The Broncos led for most of the game, but never by more than four points. The Roadrunners closed to within one point 10 times, the final instance at 29-28. A kill by Francis won the game for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona trailed 23-21 in the second game before rallying strongly. The Broncos got to game point on a kill by Gordon and won the frame on an attack error by the Roadrunners. The Roadrunners won the third game easily, but the Broncos jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the fourth game and led the rest of the way. A block by Elizabeth Defoort (Jr., Glendora, Citrus College) and Kathol ended the match. On Saturday, the Broncos dropped the first game and then roared back for an 18-30, 30-25, 30-22, 30-24 victory over Cal State L.A. Francis had 15 kills and 17 digs, Defoort had 15 kills and one block, Anderson had 14 kills and four blocks and Kathol had 12 kills, eight digs and one block. Emily Kennedy (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) had 47 assists, five aces, eight digs and one block. The Broncos dropped the first game, but got untracked after that and had outstanding hitting performances the rest of the match. The Broncos had 21 kills in the second game, led by Anderson’s seven, posted five service aces in the third game, three by Stephanie Chen (Fr., Walnut, Walnut HS) and two by Kennedy. In the final game, the Broncos had 19 kills with just two errors.

BRONCOS TO HOST BIG CONFERENCE MATCHES THIS WEEKEND: The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team will look to continue its drive toward a possible NCAA Division II playoff berth when the Broncos host a pair of conference matches this weekend in Darlene May Gym. The Broncos will host Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and Chico State on Saturday.

BRONCOS HOLD STEADY IN NCAA REGIONAL POLL: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team, bidding for its first NCAA Division II playoff appearance since 1997, was ranked eighth in the most recent Pacific Region poll. The poll came out prior to the Broncos’ victories last weekend over No. 4 Cal State L.A. and No. 7 Cal State Bakersfield. The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA playoffs. The Broncos have six matches remaining in the regular season, four of them at home: Friday against Cal State Stanislaus, Saturday against Chico State, Wednesday, Nov. 10 against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Friday, Nov. 12 against Grand Canyon.

MEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS WIN EXCITING 3-2 DECISION OVER GOLDEN EAGLES

2004 Overall Record: 6-9-1. 2004 CCAA Record: 4-6-1.

BRONCOS USE SECOND-HALF FLURRY TO DOWN CAL STATE L.A.: The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team scored three goals in a five-minute span of the second half and held on to defeat Cal State L.A., 3-2, Saturday night at Kellogg Field. The Broncos, who had a scheduled match at UC San Diego on Wednesday postponed because of rain, posted their second straight victory and have now won three of their last four matches. The only loss in that span was a 2-1 overtime defeat to Sonoma State. Dustin Venegas (Fr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) scored a pair of goals for the Broncos, while Matthew Barker (So., La Verne, Bonita HS) had the other goal. Ben Van der Fluit (Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS) had a pair of assists for the Broncos. Darren Ross (Jr., Northridge, El Camino HS) also had an assist. Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) made seven saves in goal for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona had an 18-11 advantage in shots. Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick just 4:18 into the game and that goal stood up until the Broncos’ flurry early in the second half. Barker got the Broncos on the board when he headed in a cross from Van der Fluit in the 50th minute. Venegas then scored twice in a 73-second span to put the Broncos in control of the match. First, he headed in a long throw-in by Ross to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead and then he headed in a cross from Van der Fluit to make it 3-1. The Golden Eagles got a goal in the 69th minute, but couldn’t get any closer.

VENEGAS FAMILY COMBINES FOR A HAT TRICK: Saturday night was quite a night for the Venegas family. Dustin Venegas (Fr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) scored a pair of goals to lead the Bronco men’s team to a 3-2 win over Cal State L.A., while older sister Jamie Venegas (Jr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) scored a goal in the Bronco women’s 2-0 win over the Golden Eagles.

BRONCOS TO FINISH SEASON IN A BUSY WEEK: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team will play its final three matches of the season this week, beginning with a match this afternoon against UC San Diego. That match was originally scheduled for last Wednesday, but was postponed because of rain. The Broncos will then play at Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday before concluding their 2004 season with a home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at Kellogg Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and the Broncos will honor their seniors prior to the game.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS POST BIG VICTORY OVER CAL STATE L.A.

2004 Overall Record: 7-6-3. 2004 CCAA Record: 6-2-3

BRONCOS MAINTAIN HOLD ON SECOND WILDCARD SPOT: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team got a victory on the field last week and also some help from a California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division team. The Broncos beat Cal State L.A., 2-0, on Saturday night on Kellogg Field, one day after learning that San Francisco State had upset Sonoma State on Friday. The results give the Broncos a two-point lead over Sonoma State heading into the final week of competition for the second wildcard into the CCAA Championship Tournament. After starting the season with four consecutive losses, the Broncos are 7-2-3 in their last 12 matches. The Broncos struck early against the Golden Eagles, scoring both goals in the first 20 minutes of the match. Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS) opened the scoring when she beat the Cal State L.A. goalie to a beautiful pass from Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) and knocked a shot into an empty net. Araujo lofted another perfect pass less than nine minutes later and this time Jamie Venegas (Jr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) beat the goalie to the ball and sent a shot toward the goal that rolled just past the goal-line. Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) made three saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season.

BRONCOS PREPARE FOR FINAL PLAYOFF PUSH: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team will play three key California Collegiate Athletic Association contests this week, beginning with a game this evening at UC San Diego in a match originally scheduled for last Wednesday, but postponed by rain. The Broncos will also be at Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday before finishing the regular season with a home match Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. and the Broncos will honor their seniors prior to the game. Cal Poly Pomona currently holds the second wildcard spot in the CCAA by two points over Sonoma State and four points over Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos are bidding to remain the only team to reach every California Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament since its inception in 1998.
