VOLLEYBALL: BRONCOS FALL
OUT OF FIRST WITH PAIR OF LOSSES
2004 Overall Record:
11-7. 2004 CCAA Record: 6-2
BRONCOS SEE WINNING
STREAK SNAPPED AT SEVEN: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team lost its
first two matches in California Collegiate Athletic Association play this past
weekend and fell out of the CCAA lead. The Broncos dropped matches to two of
the top teams in the country, losing to No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino on
Friday and falling to No. 2 UC San Diego on Saturday. The Broncos are now in
third place in the conference, one-half game behind second-place Cal State San
Bernardino. In front of a large and vocal “Back To
School Night” crowd on Friday, the Broncos lost to Cal State San Bernardino,
30-19, 30-13, 30-25. After jumping out to a 13-10 lead in the opening game, the
Broncos were outscored, 20-6, the rest of the frame. Cal State San Bernardino
kept the pressure up in the second game and, although the Broncos played a much
better third game, the Coyotes, the three-time defending conference champion,
recorded the sweep. Kellie Francis
(Jr., Chino, Don
Lugo HS) led the Broncos with 12 kills and eight digs, while Christina Gordon (Jr., Moreno Valley,
Riverside CC) had eight kills and two blocks. Emily Kennedy (Jr., Upland,
Upland HS) had 33 assists and four digs, while Kiting Kolar (Fr., Upland,
Upland HS) had 10 digs and a pair of service aces. Cal Poly Pomona played a
much better match on Saturday night, but still fell to UC San Diego, 30-19,
33-31, 30-24. The second game, in particular, featured
several lengthy rallies and heavy drama. Cal Poly Pomona successfully fought
off four game points – two thanks to kills by Francis and another on a kill by Allison Anderson (Jr., Chino Hills,
Ayala HS) – but the Tritons eventually prevailed to take control of the match.
Cal Poly Pomona, after falling behind by as many as six points in the final game,
cut it to 26-23 on a kill by Kennedy, but could get no closer. Anderson and
Francis had 12 kills each to lead the Broncos, while Kolar
and Mallory Manzo
(Fr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had 12
digs each. The Broncos had six service aces, including three by Megan Meenan
(Sr., Hermosa Beach, El Camino College). Kennedy had 34 assists and three blocks.
BRONCOS TO CONCLUDE
FIRST HALF OF CONFERENCE PLAY: The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team
will wrap up the first round of California Collegiate Athletic Association play
with a road match on Wednesday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Broncos are
currently in third place in the conference, one-half game back of second-place
Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos have won seven of their last nine
matches. After Wednesday’s match, the Broncos will host their alumni on
Saturday at 3 p.m. before resuming
conference play the following weekend at Cal

BRONCOS
DROP TWO 2-0 DECISIONS IN CONFERENCE PLAY: The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer
team continued to struggle on offense and dropped a pair of 2-0 decision last
week in California Collegiate Athletic Association contests. The Broncos had to
wait for more than an hour for a late-arriving Cal State Bakersfield team on
Wednesday before losing to the Roadrunners, 2-0. The Roadrunners scored just 6:08 into the game and got its second score in
the 72nd minute. Cal Poly Pomona got some excellent goaltending from
Erik Dain
(Fr., Upland, Upland HS), who made
his first appearance and start for the Broncos. Dain
made seven saves, including four in the second half to keep the Broncos close.
The Broncos had two good scoring chances, but Cal State Bakersfield’s goalie
was able to stop bids by Robert Cardenas
(Sr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College) and Peter Hazdovac (Fr., San Pedro, San Pedro
HS). The Broncos then traveled to Cal State L.A. on Sunday and lost to the
Golden Eagles, 2-0. The Broncos had 10 shots in the game and five corner kicks,
but couldn’t convert any of their chances into goals. Peter Wallace (Sr., San Martin, De Anza
JC) had three shots for the Broncos. Dain made three
saves in his second straight start for the Broncos.
BRONCOS

BRONCOS
TIE ROADRUNNERS AND EDGE GOLDEN EAGLES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer
team didn’t allow a goal last week while settling for a tie against Cal State
Bakersfield and posting a 1-0 win over Cal State L.A. The Broncos started the
week with a 0-0 tie against the Roadrunners. The Broncos held a 13-3 edge in
shots and had several dangerous scoring runs in the second half and both
overtime periods, but had to settle for the tie. Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland,
Upland HS) needed only one save to record her first
shutout of the season. Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho
Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS), Erica
Rodriguez (Jr., San Diego,
Bonita Vista HS) and Sara Flowers
(Fr., Santee, Santana HS) combined for seven shots on
goal. The Broncos also had several attempts sail just wide of the mark. On
Sunday, the Broncos wasted little time jumping ahead of Cal State L.A. Jamie Venegas
(Jr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) scored with an
assist from Chelsea Hipley
(Jr., Sacramento, Woodcreek HS) just 2:36 into the
contest. The Bronco defense took it from there. Richardson
made two saves to record her second shutout of the week and the third of the
season for the Broncos. The Broncos held a 13-7 edge in shots.
BRONCOS TO CONTINUE CONFERENCE PLAY
ON THE ROAD: Cal Poly
Pomona’s women’s soccer team will continue California Collegiate Athletic
