VOLLEYBALL: BRONCOS WIN ANOTHER THRILLER, REMAIN IN FIRST

2004 Overall Record: 11-5. 2004 CCAA Record: 6-0

BRONCOS RUN CURRENT WINNING STREAK TO SEVEN: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team remained unbeaten in California Collegiate Athletic Association play and ran its current winning streak to seven with home victories last weekend against Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay. The Broncos are 6-0 in CCAA play for the first time ever and hold a one-half game lead over UC San Diego. The seven-game winning streak is the longest for the Broncos since the 1997 season. The Broncos got a major scare on Friday when Sonoma State extended them to five games before Cal Poly Pomona prevailed, 30-23, 24-30, 31-29, 27-30, 15-13. Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino, Don Lugo HS) had 18 kills, including the match-winner that glanced off a Sonoma State player and sailed long. Allison Anderson (Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) had 16 kills and five blocks, while Christina Gordon (Jr., Moreno Valley, Riverside CC) added 14 kills and four blocks. The two teams split the first two games and the Broncos had to rally from a 20-13 deficit to win the third frame. Francis had consecutive kills to snap a 29-29 tie. The Seawolves grabbed the fourth frame and led, 9-6, in the fifth and deciding game before the Broncos rallied once again. The Broncos scored five straight points to erase the deficit and later took the lead for good at 13-12 on a kill by Antoinette Kathol (Fr., Sierra Madre, La Salle HS). A block by Kathol and Emily Kennedy (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) made it 14-12 and Francis finished off the match one point later on a powerful kill. Kennedy had 56 assists in the match, while Kiting Kolar (Fr., La Canada, La Canada HS) had a team-high 22 digs. Francis and Anderson both had five blocks. The Broncos then completed the weekend with a 24-30, 30-14, 30-15, 30-20 victory over CCAA newcomer Cal State Monterey Bay. Anderson had a team-high 15 kills in just 28 swings, while Francis had 13 kills. Mallory Manzo (Fr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) and Casey Riedel (So., Saugus, Saugus HS) had 10 kills each. Riedel also had nine digs and five blocks, while Manzo also had a team-high three aces. Kathol added eight kills and five blocks, while Kennedy had 41 assists and two aces. Jen Bullock (Sr., Anaheim, Eastern New Mexico) added 10 assists for the Broncos.

BRONCOS SET FOR BIG FIRST-PLACE SHOWDOWNS: The first-place Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team will play two big matches in Darlene May Gym this weekend against two teams ranked in the top-seven nationally. The Broncos (11-5, 6-0) own a one-half game lead in the California Collegiate Athletic Association over UC San Diego. Cal Poly Pomona will host No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and then entertain No. 2 UC San Diego on Saturday. The Broncos are off to their best-ever conference start and have their longest winning streak since 1997.

MEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS SPLIT CONFERENCE GAMES

2004 Overall Record: 3-6. 2004 CCAA Record: 1-3-0.

BRONCOS BEAT COYOTES, FALL TO TRITONS: The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team split a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association contests last week, getting its first conference win in the process. The Broncos opened the week with a solid 2-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino at Kellogg Field on Tuesday. The Broncos scored two first-half goals and made them stand up against a spirited Coyote rally in the second half. Dustin Venegas (Fr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead just 2:15 into the game when he redirected a corner kick from Ben Van der Fluit (Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS). Sean Cima (Fr., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS) made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute when scored with an assist from Peter Wallace (Sr., San Martin, De Anza JC). It turned out to be the game-winner goal, the second of the season for Cima. Cal State San Bernardino cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 64th minute and had a man advantage for the final 24 minutes after Robert Cardenas (Sr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College) picked up his second yellow card and was ejected. Gabriel Ward (Sr., Chino Hills, Damien HS), who came on to replace injured starter Tim Sisk (Jr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) with 10 seconds remaining in the first half, made three big saves down the stretch to preserve the win. The Broncos weren’t as successful on Saturday as No. 12 UC San Diego scored three goals in the first half and went on to a 6-1 victory at Kellogg Field. Venegas scored the lone Bronco goal in the final minute of play. The Broncos were outshot, 17-4. Ward and Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) combined for five saves.

BRONCOS CONCLUDE HOME STAND, THEN HEAD FOR L.A.: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team will play the fourth and final contest of a four-game homestand Wednesday with a match against perennial power Cal State Bakersfield at 4:30 p.m. The Broncos will then travel to Los Angeles to face Cal State L.A. on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS LOSE FOR FIRST TIME IN CCAA PLAY

2004 Overall Record: 3-5-1. 2004 CCAA Record: 2-1-1

BRONCOS TIE COYOTES, BUT THEN FALL TO UC SAN DIEGO: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team earned a tie with Cal State San Bernardino on Tuesday to start the week, but then lost its first California Collegiate Athletic Association contest of the season to UC San Diego on Saturday. The Broncos got a late goal from Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) to get the tie with the Coyotes. Araujo scored for the fifth time in the past four games. She knocked in the rebound of her own penalty shot in the 75th minute to erase a 1-0 Cal State San Bernardino lead. The Coyotes got their goal on a controversial penalty kick in the first half. Cal Poly Pomona goalie Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) was issued a yellow card after a collision with a Cal State San Bernardino player and the Coyotes were awarded a penalty kick. The Broncos also had a goal wiped out because of an offsides call. Cal Poly Pomona had an 11-10 edge in shots. Richardson made six saves. The Broncos then suffered a 3-1 loss to UC San Diego on Saturday. The Broncos evened the game at 1-1 when Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr., San Diego, U. of San Diego HS) scored her second goal of the season in the 51st minute. She outfought a pair of UC San Diego defenders in the box and drilled a shot inside the left post. The Tritons, though, responded with a goal two minutes later and got an insurance tally in the 71st minute to put the game away. Both teams had eight shots in the match.

BRONCOS TO PLAY TWO DIVISIONAL CONTESTS THIS WEEK: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team will play two California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division rivals this week, one at home and one on the road. The Broncos will finish a four-game homestand on Wednesday with a match against Cal State Bakersfield at 7 p.m. The Broncos will then face Cal State L.A. on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Los Angeles.
