VOLLEYBALL: BRONCOS LOSE FOUR OF FIVE IN BUSY WEEK

2004 Overall Record: 4-5

BRONCOS HAVE STRING OF FIVE-GAME MATCHES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team packed about as much volleyball action as it could during a busy week that featured the 2004 Holiday Inn Select Diamond Bar/Cal Poly Pomona Invitational. Of the five matches the Broncos played last week, four of them were decided in five games. Counting the match against Alaska Fairbanks on Aug. 28, the Broncos had a string of five consecutive five-game matches. That is a new program record, eclipsing the old mark of four in a row set by the 2002 and 1990 teams. Of the nine matches played so far this season by the Broncos, six have gone to five games. The Broncos opened the week with a five-game loss to Seattle Pacific. Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 2-0 lead, only to see the Falcons rally for a 17-30, 28-30, 30-27, 30-19, 15-13 win in Darlene May Gym. Allison Anderson (Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) had a team-high 20 kills, while Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino, Don Lugo HS) had 18 kills. Emily Kennedy (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) had 48 assists and Breezie Jordan (Jr., Ventura, Buena HS) and Kiting Kolar (Fr., La Canada, La Canada HS) had 19 digs each. The Broncos opened tournament play on Friday by losing a five-game match to Indianapolis. For the second straight time, the Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 lead, only to see the Greyhounds rally for a 19-30, 26-30, 30-26, 30-26, 15-11 victory. Anderson led the Broncos with 23 kills, while Francis had 21 and Christina Gordon (Jr., Moreno Valley, Riverside CC) had 13. Antoinette Kathol (Fr., Sierra Madre, La Salle HS) had seven blocks, including four solos. Kennedy had 58 assists, while Jordan led the Broncos with 20 digs. The Broncos returned later Friday and lost another marathon match, this one to Seattle University. The Broncos forced a fifth game by winning a tight battle in Game 4, but the Redhawks prevailed, 26-30, 30-24, 30-28, 27-30, 17-15. Anderson had 21 kills and five blocks to lead the Broncos, while Gordon had 15 and four blocks. Kathol led the Broncos with 14 blocks, while Kolar had a team-high 23 digs. Kennedy had 34 assists and three aces, while Jen Bullock (Sr., Anaheim, Eastern New Mexico) had 17 assists. On Saturday, the Broncos snapped their four-match losing streak – all in five games – with, what else, a five-game victory. The Broncos trailed, 2-1, but rallied strongly to post a 30-28, 22-30, 21-30, 30-24, 15-6 win over Western New Mexico. Francis had a career-high 26 kills to lead the way, while Anderson and Gordon had 15 each. Elizabeth Defoort (Jr., Glendora, Citrus College) added 10 kills. Kennedy had 45 assists, Bullock had 20 assists and Mallory Manzo (Fr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had seven kills and 15 digs. In the Broncos’ final match of the tourney, Chaminade jumped out ahead and never let Cal Poly Pomona recover while recording a 30-26, 30-27, 30-24 victory. Anderson had 14 kills for the Broncos.

BRONCOS TO OPEN CONFERENCE ON THE ROAD THIS WEEK: The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team will open California Collegiate Athletic Association play this week with a pair of tough road matches. Cal Poly Pomona will be at Cal State L.A. on Friday and Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The Broncos will have a nonconference match at home against the University of La Verne on Tuesday, Sept. 14 before hitting the road for two more conference matches against Chico State on Friday, Sept. 17 and Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, Sept. 18. The first CCAA match at home for the Broncos will be on Friday, Sept. 24 against Sonoma State.

MEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS COMPLETE ROAD TRIP WITH TOUGH LOSSES

2004 Overall Record: 1-3.

BRONCOS BATTLE IN WASHINGTON AGAINST REGIONAL FOES: The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team competed well against two of the better teams in the NCAA Division II Far West Region, but didn’t have any victories to show for it. The Broncos lost a disappointing 1-0 decision to Seattle Pacific last Monday when the Falcons scored the lone goal of the game in the 70th minute on a free kick from about 25 yards out. Tim Sisk (Jr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) had four saves for the Broncos, while Andrew Pierce (Jr., Oswego, N.Y., Oswego HS), Robert Cardenas (Sr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College), Ben Van der Fluit (Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS) and Sean Cima (Fr., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS) had two shots each. Each team had 13 shots each in the contest. The Broncos then jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead at Seattle University on Wednesday, but the Redhawks stormed back for a 3-1 win. The Redhawks scored a pair of first-half goals in a nine-minute span to take the lead. Kory Felix (Sr., Brea, Brea-Olinda HS) put the Broncos on the board just 1:59 into the match when he knocked in a corner kick from Van der Fluit. Sisk made a pair of saves for the Broncos, while Gabriel Ward (Sr., Chino Hills, Damien HS), who played the second half in goal for the Broncos, made one save. Seattle owned a 13-8 edge in shots.

BRONCOS TO HOST FINAL NON-CONFERENCE MATCH ON FRIDAY: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team will host Concordia on Friday in its final non-conference contest of the season. The Broncos will then begin California Collegiate Athletic Association play next Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Broncos will then play their next four conference matches at home.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS BLANKED BY SEATTLE PACIFIC

2004 Overall Record: 0-3.

BRONCOS WIND UP TWO-GAME SWING WITH SHUTOUT DEFEAT: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team concluded its Washington road trip with a 4-0 loss at Seattle Pacific. The Falcons are ranked 23rd in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) and Kimberly Weiss (Fr., Fresno, San Joaquin Memorial HS) combined for three saves in goal for the Broncos, who were on the short end of a 16-8 count in shots. Kimberly Stillman (Fr., Arcadia, Arcadia HS) and Kristi Ibello (So., Santa Rosa, Ursuline HS) each had two shots for the Broncos. Seattle Pacific scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game and held a 3-0 lead at halftime.

BRONCOS TO FACE COUGARS, THEN HOST CONCORDIA: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team will play its final two non-conference matches of the season this week, beginning with a road game at NAIA power Azusa Pacific on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. The Broncos will return home to host Concordia on Friday evening before beginning California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Cal State Dominguez Hills. After the match at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Broncos’ next four conference matches – against Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, UC San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield – will be at Kellogg Field.

CROSS COUNTRY: BRONCOS RUN WELL IN SEASON OPENER

CAL POLY POMONA IMPRESSES IN CAL STATE FULLERTON MEET: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s cross country  teams opened the 2004 season last Saturday with some impressive showings at Cal State Fullerton’s Season Opener. The Broncos were just one point behind club team Cal Coast, while beating Division I programs UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton, Pepperdine and the University of San Diego. The women, meanwhile, finished eighth out of 19 teams and outdistanced CCAA rival Cal State San Bernardino by more than 100 points. Batres, a returning All-American, finished second in the men’s 8,000-meter race with a time of 24:39.5. Rojas, meanwhile, the CCAA runner-up last year, was fourth in 24:55.3. J.D. Tawney (Jr., Barstow, Barstow HS) was 19th in 25:54.8. Brad Theobald (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) was 35th in 26:25.0 and Chris Miano (Jr., Barstow, Mt.
