BASEBALL: BRONCOS WIN CCAA SOUTH DIVISION TITLE

2005 Record: 29-21. 2005 CCAA Record: 25-14

NCAA Division II West Region Ranking: 5

BRONCOS WIN TWO OUT OF THREE AGAINST COYOTES: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team won two of three games this past week over Cal State San Bernardino to wrap up the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division title. The Broncos clinched the South title on Friday, beating Cal State San Bernardino, 10-8. Taylor Wilding (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) pitched six strong innings to pick up his 10th win of the season. He allowed eight hits and three runs while walking six and striking out five. He left with two on and nobody out in the seventh. John Lee (So., West Covina, Damien HS) got out of the jam and pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Broncos. Cal State San Bernardino scored five runs in the ninth inning to make it close, but Luis Carreras (Jr., San Dimas, Walnut HS) came on to strike out the only two batters he faced to earn the save. Chris Janowicz (Jr., Arroyo Grande, Oregon State) had four hits to lead a 17-hit attack. Matt Lopez (Sr., Lancaster, Quartz Hill HS), Kevin Falls (So., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) and Greg Denning (Sr., Atascadero, Cuesta College) had three hits each. The Broncos then used two big innings to post a 9-6 win over Cal State San Bernardino in the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday. John Cross (Jr., La Palma, Long Beach CC) allowed five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings and got the win to improve to 7-2 on the season. Kyle Todd (Fr., Anaheim, Magnolia HS) worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Lee, for the second straight game, came on to get the Broncos out of a jam and worked 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief. Lee picked up his fourth save of the season. Andy Gonzales (Sr., Whittier, California HS) had a three-run triple to highlight a five-run second inning that gave the Broncos a big early lead. Jarrod Allen (Sr., Poway, San Diego Mesa College) belted a grand slam home run in the fifth inning to put the Broncos ahead, 9-3. Anthony Esquer (Jr., Chino Hills, Whittier Christian HS) and Gonzales had three hits each to lead a 13-hit attack. Then, in a well-played nightcap, the Broncos had a six-game winning streak snapped in a 1-0 loss. The only run of the game came on a solo home run by Cal State San Bernardino’s batter leading off the game. The game included a sensational highlight-reel catch by right-fielder Matt Stevens (Sr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS), who scaled the wall in right-field, reached high over the fence and pulled back what would have been a two-run home run in the third inning. The Coyotes, though, also got a pair of defensive gems, turning a pair of hard-hit smashes by the Broncos with runners in scoring position into inning-ending double plays. Carreras continued his impressive pitching late in the season, going the full seven innings and allowing only four hits and the one run. He walked two and struck out 11. The Broncos had eight hits, including two each by Falls, Allen and Esquer.
