MEN’S BASKETBALL: BRONCOS GRAB A SHARE OF CCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

2004-05 Record: 21-6. 2004-05 CCAA Record: 16-4

2004-05 Regional Seeding: 3

BRONCOS BEAT TOROS, OTTERS TO FINISH REGULAR SEASON: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team finished the 2004-05 regular season with wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Monterey Bay and wound up with a share of their first California Collegiate Athletic Association title since 1981. The last time the Broncos earned a piece of the conference title was 24 years ago when Cal Poly Pomona shared the crown with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This time, the Broncos share the title with Cal State San Bernardino, which lost to San Francisco State on Saturday night in its conference finale. Cal Poly Pomona, after a 1-3 start to the season, finished the regular season with 20 wins in its last 23 games. The Broncos began the final week with a 73-50 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday. Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 40-24 halftime lead and built leads as large as 27 points in the second half. The win also guaranteed the Broncos their third straight 20-win season. David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) and Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had 16 points each to lead the Broncos. Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) had 10 points and six rebounds. The Broncos then honored three seniors – Matt Nelsen (Sr., Santa Clarita, New Mexico Highlands), Bonds and Sybesma – before their regular season finale against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday. The Broncos then avenged an earlier loss to the Otters with a 79-66 win. The victory was a milestone for Head Coach Greg Kamansky, who picked up the 100th win of his Cal Poly Pomona career. Bonds led the Broncos with 19 points and six rebounds, while Sybesma had 16 points, three rebounds and two assists. Bonds and Sybesma will finish their Cal Poly Pomona careers as the top two scorers in the program’s history. Boyd added 10 points in the win. The Broncos raced to a 23-10 lead in the first nine minutes of the game, but the Otters battled back and sliced the advantage to 38-31 at halftime. Cal State Monterey Bay got to within four points, 45-41, with 15:43 left, but that was as close as the Otters would get. The Broncos shot 57 percent for the game.

BRONCOS SET TO OPEN PLAYOFFS IN BELLINGHAM, WA: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team drew the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Division II West Region and will face No. 6 Seattle Pacific in a first-round playoff game at Western Washington. The winner of the Cal Poly Pomona-Seattle Pacific game will meet the winner of No. 2 Hawaii Hilo and No. 7 Chico State on Saturday at 5 p.m. The regional championship game is Monday at 7 p.m. Cal Poly Pomona shared the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship this year with Cal State San Bernardino, earning a conference title for the first time since 1981. The Broncos, the 2003 NCAA Division II West Region champs, are making their third straight appearance in the playoffs.

BRONCOS POST BIG WINS OVER TOROS, OTTERS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team knocked Cal State Dominguez Hills out of a share of the California Collegiate Athletic Association lead on Wednesday and then beat Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday to conclude another successful season. The Broncos wound up in a tie for second in the conference with Cal State Dominguez Hills, just one game back of conference champion Chico State. The Broncos opened the week with an 81-78 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday in Kellogg Gym. The Broncos completed a season sweep of the Toros. Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario, University of Arizona), in her second straight heroic effort playing despite an injured shoulder, poured in a game-high 26 points, while Brandi Fletcher (Jr., Pomona, Diamond Ranch HS) had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Shanika Perkins (Jr., Oakland, Oakland HS) also had a big game, scoring a career-high 18 points. The Broncos trailed by as many as five points early, but closed the first half with a 19-6 run to take a 38-30 halftime lead. Cal Poly Pomona stretched its lead to 14 points, 57-43, with 11:38 to go. Cal State Dominguez Hills, though, steadily chipped away at the lead and finally tied the game, 69-69, with 2:58 to go. Allen then hit a jumper and Perkins hit two free throws to put the Broncos ahead for good. After the Toros cut the lead back to one, 73-72, Perkins answered with a 3-pointer with 55 seconds left to boost the lead back to four points and the Broncos prevailed. Cal Poly Pomona returned to action on Friday and honored seniors Allen, Britt Sumida (Sr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) and Shyrah Thomas (Sr., Inglewood, San Francisco State) in pregame ceremonies. Cal Poly Pomona got a 3-pointer from Sumida in the opening minute and led the rest of the way in an 82-67 win over Cal State Monterey Bay. Allen led the Broncos with 22 points and seven rebounds, while Fletcher had 13 points and five rebounds. Alexis Wilson (Sr., Wayzata, MN, Iowa State) had nine points and three rebounds. Thomas had six points and six steals. The Broncos led by 13 at halftime, 39-26, and never led by less than 11 points in the second half.

The Broncos drew the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Division II West Region and will face California Collegiate Athletic Association champion and No. 3 seed Chico State in the first round 12:30 p.m. Friday at Seattle Pacific. The winner of that game will play the winner of the No. 2 Western Washington and No. 7 Cal State Dominguez Hills contest on Saturday at 5 p.m. The championship game is set for Monday at 7 p.m. Cal Poly Pomona has won five national titles, which is tied for the most in the NCAA Division II. The Broncos also have a Division II record 48 postseason victories and will be making their 20th NCAA playoff appearance, which is No. 2 all-time.
