BRONCOS BEAT COYOTES
IN FRONT OF A RECORD HOME CROWD: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team picked
up two important California Collegiate Athletic Association victories last
weekend, including a thrilling win over rival Cal State San Bernardino in front
of a huge crowd at Pack the Gym Night. A new Kellogg Gym record crowd of 1,672
saw the Broncos come up big down the stretch in a 70-67 win Friday over the
Coyotes. The win knocked the Coyotes out of a share of first place and into a
second-place tie with the Broncos and Sonoma
State. David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona
Centennial HS), who hit the memorable game-tying shot at the buzzer against Cal
State San Bernardino in the 2003 NCAA Division II West Regional championship
game, was at it again Friday against the Coyotes. Sybesma
had a game-high 20 points, six rebounds and four assists and hit the biggest
shot of the game in the final minute of play. With the game tied at 54-54, Sybesma knocked down a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to
give the Broncos the lead for good, 57-54. Sybesma
made a free throw with 19.6 seconds left to keep the lead at 58-55 and two free
throws by Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana,
Etiwanda HS) with 11.6 seconds left iced the victory for the Broncos. Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) had 12 points, including a key steal and driving
layup that tied the score at 54-54. Bonds also had
six rebounds, two assists and three steals. Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg,
Pittsburg HS) and Boyd had seven points each, while Dion Cook (So., Canoga
Park, Chaminade
HS) had six points. Cal Poly Pomona was on the short end of a 36-30 rebounding
count, but made only eight turnovers in the game and also converted 15-of-21
free-throw attempts. The Broncos then completed the weekend sweep with a 71-55
victory over UC San Diego on Saturday night. Sybesma
capped his tremendous weekend with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists,
while Cook added a career-high 16 points. Bonds had 15 points, five rebounds,
three assists and three steals. The Broncos put the game away early, jumping
out to leads of 14-2, 23-8 and 30-11 before UC San Diego closed the first half
with an 8-0 run that made it 30-19 at halftime. Cal Poly Pomona quickly opened
up a 15-point lead in the second half and built leads as large as 19. UC San
Diego never got closer than 12 points after that. Kaelen Daniels (Fr., Compton, Artesia HS) and Kevin Neveu (Fr., San
Leandro, St. Joseph Notre
Dame HS) had six points each for the Broncos.
BRONCOS GO BACK ON THE ROAD FOR NEXT FOUR GAMES: Cal Poly
Pomona’s men’s basketball team will face two key California Collegiate Athletic
Association contests on the road this week, beginning with a Wednesday game
against Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.
The Broncos will then meet conference newcomer Cal
State Monterey Bay
on Saturday. The Wednesday game against Cal State Dominguez Hills will be web
cast on the Cal Poly Pomona athletic website. The Broncos will also play on the
road next week against San Francisco State
and Sonoma State
before returning home for a key showdown with CCAA leader Cal State Bakersfield
on Friday, Feb. 11. Cal Poly Pomona is currently tied for second place in the
conference, one game back of Cal State Bakersfield.

BRONCOS POST TWO WINS
OVER REGIONALLY-RANKED OPPONENTS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team
recorded an important California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep last
weekend at Kellogg Gym. The Broncos, in front of a record Pack
the Gym Night crowd, defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 70-57, Friday night. Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario,
University of Arizona),
the leading scorer in NCAA Division II, had 28 points, six rebounds and four
assists to lead the victory. Khiara Ferguson
(So., Gardena, Bishop
Montgomery HS) had a career-high 10 points and six rebounds, while Alexis Wilson (Jr., Wayzata,
MN, Iowa
State) had a career-high 10 points
and three rebounds. Cal Poly Pomona led nearly the entire way, going on a quick
7-0 run to take a 17-11 advantage 10 minutes into the game. The Broncos led by
as many as 11 points before settling for a 33-25 halftime lead. The Broncos led
by double-digit margins for most of the second half against the Coyotes, who
came into the game ranked fifth in the region. Cal State San Bernardino closed to
within eight points, 45-37, but the Broncos went on a 14-4 run to grab a 59-41
advantage with 8:31 to go and led comfortably the rest of the way. The Broncos
shot 56.9 percent against the No. 2 defense in the country and limited the
Coyotes to just 34 percent shooting. Cal Poly Pomona then defeated UC San
Diego, 83-78, on Saturday to complete the weekend sweep. Allen had 18 points
and a career-high 15 rebounds, while Brandi
Fletcher (Jr., Pomona, Diamond Ranch HS) had a season-high 18 points and six rebounds.
Natasha Reed (Fr., San Francisco,
Deer Valley HS) just missed a double-double, recording a season-high 12
rebounds and grabbing nine rebounds. The Broncos led by as many as seven points
in the first half, 29-22, but a 12-3 UC San Diego run gave the Tritons a 34-32
lead. The Broncos grabbed a 40-39 halftime lead thanks to a late three-point
play by Reed. The Tritons led by four points, 57-53, with 12:43 to go, but the Broncos took the lead for good on
back-to-back three-pointers by Allen and Shanika Perkins (Jr., Oakland,
Oakland HS), 63-58, and eventually extended the lead to 81-66 with 1:53 left. The Broncos shot
41.8 percent to just 34.6 percent for the Tritons. Lauren Stayton (Jr., Inglewood,
Fresno State)
had eight points and five rebounds, while Perkins finished with seven points
and two assists.
