Ensuring
the health and fitness of Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes
is Head Athletic Trainer Ruem Malasarn.
Malasarn, who has been with Cal Poly Pomona since August of
2000 and was promoted to his current position in June of 2002,
is responsible for the health - through athletic training
- of more than 250 student-athletes. He also supervises the
drug testing and drug prevention programs and educates one
certified athletic trainer and seven student athletic trainers.
This past year, Malasarn had an article on the characteristics
of successful athletic training published in the Journal of
Athletic Training. He also spoke on the same topic at the
National Athletic Trainers Clinical Symposium in Los
Angeles in 2001.
Prior to his current stint at Cal Poly Pomona, Malasarn was
a graduate assistant at Fresno State from 1998-2000. He had
also served as a student-trainer at Cal Poly Pomona from 1995-97.
Malasarn did his undergraduate work at Cal Poly Pomona and
received his bachelors degree in Kinesiology with a
minor in communications in 1997. He earned his Masters
degree from Fresno State in 2000.
He earned his certification from the National Athletic Trainers
Association in 1997 and was certified as a strength and conditioning
specialist in 2001.
Malasarn was an assistant athletic trainer and lecturer in
the Kinesiology department at Cal Poly Pomona beginning in
2000.
He is a graduate of Arcadia High School, where he competed
in swimming and water polo. He also swam at Mt. San Antonio
College for one year before completing his undergraduate work
at Cal Poly Pomona.
An avid surfer, Malasarn repairs and refurbishes surfboards
in his spare time. He and his wife, Maria Sansui, were married
in June 2000 and reside in Arcadia. Maria is a swim coach
and teacher at Glendale High School.
