Director of Sports Information

Paul Helms
comes to Cal Poly Pomona after a lengthy career in newspapers.
Entering his third year with Bronco athletics, Helms was a
columnist and sports writer at the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin
for 14 years. He wrote a sports column for several years and
covered professional, college and high school events for the
paper.
As the
Director of Sports Information, Helms is responsible for the
promotion, marketing and public relations for Cal Poly Pomona's
12 intercollegiate athletic teams. He supervises the production
of all media guides, press releases and web pages for the
athletic department. He also works daily during the academic
year to maintain ties with the media so the department can
receive coverage to a broad spectrum of the community.
Helms
earned his bachelor's degree in communication from the University
of Redlands in 1983. Before working for the Daily Bulletin,
he worked for weekly newspapers in Lake Elsinore and Temecula.
His first job was with the Yucaipa-Calimesa News-Mirror.
During
his time with the Daily Bulletin, Helms covered two Super
Bowls, four NBA Finals involving the Los Angeles Lakers, one
Major League Baseball All-Star game, 11 Rose Bowls and three
WBC welterweight championship bouts involving Sugar Shane
Mosley. He wrote major profiles on athletes such as Mosley,
Mark McGwire, Mike Sweeney and also wrote features the past
two years on several Cal Poly Pomona competitors.
He
resides in Long Beach with his wife, Caryn, and their 3-year-old
twins, Drew
and Emily.
