1. Library Catalog
- Use the Library Catalog to find books and other materials
- Search by author, title, subject, or keyword
- Does the Library have a certain journal? Search by journal title.
- No access to journal articles.
2. Databases: Journal Articles and More
- Access to thousands of articles in all subjects; many full text
- Search by keyword, author, journal title, date, etc.
- Click the Find It! button for help finding the article.

Use these databases to find articles in engineering and technical journals:
- Applied Science Full Text (WilsonWeb)
Best place to start for engineering research; excellent coverage of career and professional information. Depending on your topic, include Wilson’s Biological & Agricultural and/or General Science Indexes.
- Compendex (Engineering Village 2)
Research database for engineering and applied sciences; includes conference proceedings, reports, and other engineering publications.
- GeoRef
Journals, reports, dissertations, other publications in geosciences; excellent source for information on earthquakes, water, soils, and related topics.
- Medline
Access to medical literature published worldwide. PubMed is the free, publicly available version. The Library's Medline generally provides better access to articles.
- TOXNET, Toxicology Data Network
From the National Library of Medicine this is a collection of databases on
toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health, and toxic releases.
- ASCE Journals Online
30+ peer-reviewed journals, 1993 to present. You can browse tables of contents or search all issues of an available title. You can also use ASCE’s Civil Engineering Database to search the contents of all ASCE publications, 1973 to present.
General News and Business Databases
For information about current events, companies and industries:
3. Reference Sources
- Encyclopedia of Environmental Analysis and Remediation (Ref GE 10 E49)
Emphasis is on sampling, analysis, and remediation; also covers pollution sources, transport, regulations, and health effects.
- Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology (Ref TP 9 E685, 27 vols)
Available in print and online editions. Comprehensive source on all aspects of chemical technology including chemicals, toxicology, manufacturing and process technologies. The technologies and processes for waste control and treatment are well covered.
- ThomasNet.com
Use this free directory to find producers of chemicals and manufacturers of hazardous material handling, containment, and storage equipment, as well as hazardous materials management services. Based on the Thomas Register of American Manufacturers (no longer being printed).
4. Hazardous Materials Information
- Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials (Ref T 55.3 H3S3)
Provides data on over 15,000 compounds. Included are CAS registry numbers, molecular formula and weight, properties, toxicity data, hazard rating, status with EPA or other agencies, more.
- Genium’s Handbook of Safety, Health, and Environmental Data
(Ref T55.3 H3 G46) Similar to Sax (above).
- Material Safety Data Sheets
MSDS provide workers and emergency personnel with procedures for handling a particular substance. Data includes physical properties, toxicity, reactivity, etc.
- Patty’s Industrial Hygiene. RC967 .P37 2000
Recognition and evaluation of chemical and other hazards in the workplace; also covers engineering control of exposure and personal protection. Earlier editions combine Patty’s Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology and include toxicological data on compounds. We don’t have the latest edition of Patty’s Toxicology, but much of the data can be found in the other sources listed in this section.
5. Legislation & Regulation
Engineers cannot work in any area of pollution or environmental control, especially hazardous waste management, without contact with myriad laws and regulations.
- LexisNexis
A well known legal research database. Look for “Legal” in the red search banner for access to state and federal codes and regulations.
- FindLaw
A free website for state and federal laws, regulations, and cases.
Legislation & Regulation - Federal
