  Admission Requirements  
 
  1. What are the requirements to be admitted as an international student directly from a foreign high school?  The minimum acceptable grade average is 3.00 on a four-point scale (approximately a “B” average).  The conversion of grades is determined by an International Analyst in the Office of Admissions & Outreach.
     
  2. What if I graduated from high school in the USA?  Graduates of U.S. high schools, accredited international high schools, and USA dependent high schools overseas, must submit an American college test (ACT) or scholastic aptitude test (SAT). You must also have college preparatory courses taken and passed with grades of “C” or better from grades 9 through 12.  Please read the Testing Requirements and Deadlines.
     
  3. If I do not have the minimum college preparatory subjects completed, can I still be admitted to the university?  Without meeting these requirements, you cannot be admitted to Cal Poly Pomona.  Instead, you will be required to attend a community college and reapply to the university when you have 60 semester transferable units. Within these 60 semester units, you are required to have completed (with grades of “C” or better) 30 semester units of general education courses.
     
  4. What is the minimum admission requirement to enter the university as a lower-division transfer student?  At this time Cal Poly Pomona is not accepting applications from lower-division transfer students.
     
  5. What is the minimum admission requirement to enter the university?  You must have 60 semester transferable units. Within these 60 semester units, you must have 30 semester units of general education. Within these 30 semester units, four courses are mandatory:
    • written communication
    • oral communication
    • critical thinking
    • quantitative reasoning
    General education courses may be taken at a community college in the USA.

  6. If I do not have 30 semester units of General Education, can I still be admitted as an upper-division transfer student?  No. You will be required to attend a community college in the USA and complete the general education courses that you are lacking.
     
  7. What is needed in order to determine my degree equivalency?  Your official transcript (in the original language and a certified English translation) – including the posting of your degree.  Your diploma or degree certificate will also be required, if your degree is not posted on your transcript.
     
  How to Apply  
 
  1. When can I submit my application?  Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their application during the Priority Application Filing Period as applications are subject to close at any time AFTER this period ends.
    Application Filing Periods:
    Quarter Initial Filing Period
    Fall Oct. 1 - Nov. 30 of the previous year
    Winter June 1 - 30 of the previous year
    Spring August 1 - 31 of the previous year
    Summer February 1 - 28 of the same year

  2. How do I apply for admission to Cal Poly Pomona?  We strongly encourage you to apply to Cal Poly Pomona on-line at CSUMentor.  If you do not have access to the Web, application forms may be obtained at:
    • any California high school; or
    • any community college; or
    • from the Admissions Office at any of the campuses of the California State University.

    Your application and $55.00 filing fee (or fee waiver request) must be submitted by the application deadline.

    Apply on-line! It is faster and more accurate.  Application receipt will be confirmed via email.
     

  3. How soon will I receive my I-20?  I-20s are issued by Cal Poly Pomona's International Center.  Please feel free to contact an International Student Advisor anytime regarding when your I-20 will be issued.

    For more information about obtaining your I-20 from the International Center AFTER you have received your formal letter of admission, please call (909) 869-3267 or send an e-mail to dsgillespie@csupomona.edu.  Please note that an I-20 cannot be issued to you until you have been officially admitted to Cal Poly Pomona.
     

  4. How many transfer credits will be granted once I have been accepted to the university?  Once you have been admitted, your file is sent to an evaluator who will tentatively determine how many credits you will be granted.  Once the evaluation process has been completed, you will have an opportunity to review your transfer evaluation with an academic advisor when you attend an orientation program.

     
  Required Documents  
 
  1. What types of documents are required to be sent from my high school to support my application as a first-time freshman?  In most cases, we require grades from the 9th through the 12th year.  Additional certificates, diplomas, or mark sheets may be required once your application has been reviewed.
     
  2. Are official high school transcripts required?  Yes. Please make arrangements to have your transcripts mailed directly from your institution to Cal Poly Pomona.
     
  3. When should transcripts be sent to Cal Poly Pomona?  Transcripts must be received on or before the publicized document deadline for the term you are applying for.  Transcripts must be mailed directly to the Office of Admissions and Outreach at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, from each institution attended.  We will also accept sealed, hand-carried transcripts.
     
  4. What if my transcripts are not in English?   If your school does not provide an English translation, take your own personal copies of your transcripts to a certified English translation agency.  Once the translation has been completed, please forward it to the Office of Admissions & Outreach immediately.  Please note that you still need to have your official transcripts mailed directly from your school.
     
  5. Are official transcripts needed to determine if I'm eligible?  Yes. Please make arrangements to have two copies of your transcripts mailed immediately from your institution to the Office of Admissions & Outreach.
     
  6. Are English translations required for documents?  Yes. All documents must have a certified English translation.
     
  7. Are there any other documents required prior to being accepted?  Yes. You are required to have evidence (supported by a bank statement) of financial resources to meet the cost of education at Cal Poly Pomona. The approximate cost for one academic year is $21,600 for undergraduates and $19,400 for graduates. You are also required to purchase health insurance from the university.
     
  8. How do I check the status of my application file?  Your application status and information regarding documents received should be available approximately two weeks after it has been received.  You may check the status of your application through:
    • BroncoDirect; or
    • call 909 869 4555 between 8 am to 5 pm (PST) and ask to be transferred to an International Admissions Analyst.  Please leave a voice mail message, speaking slowly and distinctly, so that we can return your call as soon as possible.

 

  The TOEFL and Other Tests  
 
  1. What system wide tests are required of most new students?  English Placement Test (EPT) and Entry Level Mathematics Test (ELM) are required for first-time freshmen applicants.  Please read the Testing Requirements and Deadlines thoroughly.
     
  2. What is the minimum passing TOEFL score for undergraduate applicants?
    The following is the minimum TOEFL score for admission:
    •  a score of 525 on the paper test; or
    •  a score of 195 on the computer-based test
       
  3. How can I be exempt from the TOEFL?  To be exempt from having to meet the TOEFL requirement a student must have completed six full-time semesters in which English is the primary language of instruction. Semesters cannot be combined.

    You must request a letter from your school to be sent indicating that the language of instruction is English. This letter must come from a school authority, on letterhe
    ad.
     
  4. How can I have my TOEFL results mailed to Cal Poly Pomona?  Please contact TOEFL services in New Jersey, USA at 1-609-771-7100 or out of the U.S. at 1-609-771-7243. Make sure that you indicate 4082 as Cal Poly Pomona’s institution code number.

 

  General Frequently Asked Questions  
 
  1. How many students attend Cal Poly Pomona?  Approximately 20,000 students attend Cal Poly Pomona. For a breakdown on enrollment statistics please refer to Institutional Research and Planning.
     
  2. What is the student/faculty ratio? The student/faculty ratio is 20 to 1, with an average class size of 30 students. Smaller classes allow our students to get the personal attention they need to succeed.
     
  3. What kind of housing is available?  Several housing options are available including the Residence Halls, Residential Suites, and University Village.  Detailed information regarding these housing options are available through the University Housing Services.
     
  4. What percentage of Cal Poly Pomona students live on campus? Approximately 12 to 15 percent of the students live on campus.
     
  5. Why should students live on campus?  National studies show that students who live in residence halls have a higher grade point average. This is because they are closer to the faculty, campus, and peers in the same program. Residence halls have a 20% better chance of graduating and overall residence hall students are more satisfied with their college experience.
     
  6. Is Cal Poly Pomona on a quarter or semester system?  Cal Poly Pomona is on a quarter system, which lasts 10 weeks, plus one week for finals.

    Cal Poly Pomona is one of the few CSU’s with a state supported summer quarter. This means that the fees are essentially the same for the summer. Other CSU’s may charge more for the summer.
     

  7. What types of fraternities/sororities and clubs are on campus? Cal Poly Pomona has over 240 clubs and organizations, including eleven national fraternities and sororities; the Associated Students Incorporated; Agriculture Education Club; Ridgerunners Ski Club; Geology Club; Management Information Systems Student Organization; and Cycling Team.  Read about a specific fraternity/sorority or club on campus from the clubs and societies directory.

  8. What food services are available on campus?  With all the selections on campus, you can satisfy your appetite for different types of food.

  9. What is the difference between a Cal State University (CSU) campus and a University of California (UC) campus?  A CSU campus is dedicated first and foremost to the education of its students. Though CSU professors conduct research, their primary responsibility is teaching. In the UC system the primary emphasis is research, and then their students. Many courses in the UC are taught by graduate students, while many courses in the CSU are taught by professors.
     
  10. Can students get e-mail and access Cal Poly Pomona from home?  Yes, all Cal Poly Pomona students receive a free e-mail account that they can use on and off campus.
     
  11. How safe is Cal Poly Pomona compared to other campuses?  When compared to other CSU’s, we rank 9th in terms of size and student population and 9th in terms of total crimes. Our University Police office is staffed by trained professional police officers and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year round. All campus telephones are connected to 911, located in the Communication Center. University Police is staffed by trained dispatchers and provides telephone and two-way radio contact for emergency personnel and also serves as an after-hours contact for students, faculty and staff.

  12. Will I have a problem finding parking on campus?   Students are encouraged to arrive early to allow time to park and walk to classes. Bronco Express Campus Shuttle service is available to take students from the parking lots to classroom sites.

    There are several programs that have been implemented to enhance the availability of parking on campus. (I.e. Faculty/Staff Ride Share, Student Ride Share) In addition, our classes are scheduled from 7 a.m. till 10 p.m.
     

  13. Are there any graduate programs?  Yes, Cal Poly Pomona offers 26 Masters and credential programs.
     
  14. How many acres does the school cover?  Cal Poly Pomona covers 1,438 acres and is the second largest California State University in total land area.
     
  15. What percentage of faculty have terminal degrees?  Ninety-nine percent of the tenured and tenure-track faculty hold the doctorate or terminal degree in their fields.
     
  16. Do you have any special programs for first time freshman?  Yes, the IGE program is a set of courses in a community within the university where students get to know each other over several years. Students work collaboratively within this learning community. The first year you would take: IGE 120 Conscious and Community: Origins and Development of Human Societies, IGE 121 Rationalism and Revelation: The Ancient World, IGE 122 Authority and Faith: Feudalism and the Renaissance.     Cal Poly Pomona also has a 4-year Graduation Pledge Program. This program is designed to guarantee graduation in four years. If you are dedicated to graduating in four years, a first year student, in a major other than Architecture, and qualified for both college level math and English according to your ELM and EPT test scores, this may be the program for you.   17. How does Cal Poly Pomona compare/rank with other institutions?
    • The University graduates one of out fourteen engineers in California.
    • One of the 134 colleges named Best in the West by The Princeton Review.
    • One of US News & World Report Western Universities-Master's:Top Schools
    • The University was recently ranked fourth in the West out of 112 Western Regional universities for campus diversity.
    • The Collins School of Hospitality Management is ranked third in the nation by restaurant executives.
    • The University also has one of the top Division II athletics programs in the country, with 13 national team championships and 25 individual national championships to its credit. Our most recent championships came when our Women's Basketball Team captured the 2001 and 202 Division II National Championships.

  18. Is it true that Cal Poly Pomona participates in the Tournament of Roses parade?  Yes. Cal Poly Pomona and its sister campus, San Luis Obispo, have participated in the prestigious parade since 1948. In 1998, we were awarded the Founder’s Award.
